Normal People star Paul Mescal is set to make his National Theatre debut, as the venue returns to repertory theatre for the first time since 2020.

Announced as part of Indhu Rubasingham's first season as director of the venue are Tom Murphy’s A Whistle in the Dark, directed by Caitríona McLaughlin, and Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman, directed by Rebecca Frecknall (Cabaret).

Mescal takes on the role of Biff in the latter and reunites with Frecknall following their collaboration on A Streetcar Named Desire, which had runs at the Almeida Theatre, in the West End, and recently on Broadway.

Both plays focus on dysfunctional family relationships, the struggle for identity, and the weight of societal and familial expectations.

A second pair of productions, to run in repertory in the Lyttelton Theatre, will be announced in due course.
