In My Master Builder, audiences are transported to the Hamptons, where Elena Solness, a publishing magnate, prepares a party for Henry Solness, her architect husband, who is revealing new work. However, their tenuous relationship suffers when one of Henry’s former students, Mathilde, whom he had a previous relationship with, arrives at the party. This shocking play explores complex sexual politics and vulnerabilities laid bare in relationships.
My Master Builder in London stars Ewan McGregor in his return to the stage after 17 years. He is reunited with director Michael Grandage—they’ve previously worked together on Othello and Guys and Dolls for Donmar Warehouse, where Grandage was previously the artistic director.
“It’s such a thrill to be returning to the stage – and to work with Michael again, an actor’s director with whom I have had some of my happiest working experiences. He’s a generous collaborator, who enables you to discover the play together afresh in the rehearsal room,” said McGregor. “And what a play – I love where Lila has taken the story, a very modern take on today’s sexual politics.”
The exceptional cast also includes Elizabeth Debicki (The Crown, The Red Barn), Kate Fleetwood (A View From the Bridge, London Road), and David Ajala (One Night in Miami, Ruined).
My Master Builder is a play with a masterful creative team led by director Michael Grandage (Backstairs Billy, Orlando). Richard Kent is the costume designer, Paule Constable is the lighting designer, Adam Cork is the sound designer and composer, Lisa Aitken is the costume supervisor, and Kate Margretts is the prop supervisor.
