Stephen Sondheim and James Goldman's 1971 Broadway musical yields new emotions, textures and terrors with each repeated viewing or production. Nostalgia, as the old saying goes, isn't what it used to be. But <a href="/show/follies">Follies</a> is a show about the perils of living in the past that comes alive in the present, and reminds us - like Samuel Beckett's great work of existential terror Waiting for Godot or Chekhov's Uncle Vanya - that we have to simply face the cold light of reality and carry on. Yes, the show is really that great; like those plays, it is a defining masterpiece in modern theatre.Each production adds its own layer of nostalgia to the ones that have come before; and in this case, of a cast that came before when this one was first premiered at <a href="/theatres/national-theatre">National</a> in 2017. That has already created its own ghosts and shadows, as we now remember actors who've now left the show -&nbsp;most notably, Imelda Staunton and Philip Quast, who previously played Sally and Ben, a couple who once courted each other but married Buddy and Phyllis respectively instead -&nbsp;and enjoy their successors.Joanna Riding -&nbsp;herself a veteran of this <a href="/theatres/olivier-theatre-national">Olivier</a> stage, where she previously starred in Carousel, Sondheim's A Little Night Music and Guys and Dolls in the 1990s (the latter alongside Staunton) -&nbsp;has less nervous energy but a more wide-eyed sense of the grasping need at trying, and failing, one last time to get what she always thought she wanted, namely Ben. She doesn't seem quite as unhinged - but she's also terrifying and terrific.Alexander Hanson is more emotionally muted than Quast; that's partly because he has less natural charisma. He's punching above his weight to secure the attentions of either Phyllis (who he actually married) or Sally, but it&nbsp;shifts the focus onto them: what need is he answering in them?Janie Dee, remaining as Phyllis, now reveals more thrilling shades of her brittle, bitter persona underneath the extraordinary glamour she exudes; there's real anger - and defiance - in her rendition of the showstopping "Could I Leave You?" in which she calculates and itemises her own dissatisfaction with her marriage.And Peter Forbes, returning as Buddy, is also utterly wonderful as he loyally sticks with a wife who loves someone else, and made his own accommodations with his sense of misery.A Chekhovian pallor of lives not lived hangs over all four principals - and it is heartbreakingly contrasted with versions of their younger selves, thirty years earlier, who watch and observe what they've become (a stunning quartet of young performers Ian McIntosh, Christine Tucker, Harry Hepple and Gemma Sutton). That constant pull between the past and present defines both James Goldman's wonderful impressionistic book and Dominic Cooke's haunting production, with its sets by Vicki Mortimer, lighting by Paule Constable and above all pitch-perfect period choreography by Bill Deamer.There's so much to relish in this production that I could name every single actor, but I'll stop at one more newcomer to the 2018 cast, Claire Moore who is absolutely miraculous as Hattie Walker. She sings "Broadway Baby", one of the show's most famous songs, as if her life depended on it. It's the distillation of a performer's one-time yearning for the bright lights of Broadway, sung from the reality of what her life has come; and it sums up perfectly the show's overwhelming and powerful contrast between past and present.<a href="/show/follies">Follie</a><a href="/show/follies">s</a> is, and remains, simply phenomenal.<a href="/show/follies">Follies</a>&nbsp;is at the <a href="/theatres/national-theatre">National Theatre</a> until 11th May.Photo credit: Johan Persson

Christmas came a little bit earlier in the form of the Santa-sent - no, make that heaven-sent - <a href="/actor-profile/tamsin-greig" target="_blank">Tamsin Greig</a>, who gives nothing less than one of the best performances of 2021 as the onetime uber-agent Peggy Ramsay, in Alan Plater's 2000 play. Completing a season of revivals of plays first seen at the <a href="/theatres/hampstead-theatre">Hampstead Theatre</a>, Richard Wilson's production of <a href="https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/show/23950-peggy-for-you" target="_blank">Peggy For You</a>&nbsp;improves on the original, which I saw back in the day with Maureen Lipman in the title role. Not only does Greig instantly give off the air of someone who would know her way around a script, but she finds in Plater's series of encounters - neatly parcelled out across the two acts - something genuinely touching that mostly eluded Lipman, who played Peggy like a variant on her notable turn as Joyce Grenfell. This time round, the character seems at once richer and bolder, to the benefit of the play.&nbsp;Greig creates a true original, in keeping, one imagines, with the enduring spirit of the Australia-born, South Africa-raised Ramsay, who emigrated to England only to end up representing a cross-section of the most notable playwriting talents of her time. (Devotees of the fine 1987 movie Prick Up Your Ears, about the writer Joe Orton, may remember Vanessa Redgrave's notably suggestive Peggy, who is seen famously stroking her thigh in conversation.) Greig approximates something of the same provocations, while capturing the mercurial nature of a talent-spotter who could be ruthless one minute and&nbsp;maternally nurturing the next. This actress's splendid comic timing is, as ever, a given. So, too, is her ability to communicate reserves within a character who has herself known a thing or two about loss, however wary&nbsp;she is of revealing those aspects of her personality when a witty reply comes more readily.&nbsp;We see Peggy in conversation with an authorial newbie — the embryonic talent Simon (Josh Finan, suitably deferential), whose foray on to the London fringe perhaps improbably draws Peggy away from yet another major revival of Uncle Vanya. Careful to give us three scribes at differing points on the career spectrum, Plater brings Peggy face-to-face with the commercially successful, sexually ambiguous Philip (Jos Vantyler), leaving as the juiciest of the male roles that of the seasoned, determinedly principled Henry (Trevor Fox, bringing to this role the same prickly command he leant to The Pitmen Painters in London and on Broadway). His farewell to Peggy drives the second act and allows us to glimpse beneath the badinage to see the eponymous heroine, and the glory of sorts that has accrued to her, as worthy of a "classic three-act structure" all its own: Plater's comparatively prosaic play here dipping into the realm of the meta.Those near to the stage will have a field day scanning the posters of James Cotterill's terrifically evocative set, amongst which I was especially drawn to the Royal Court production of Rhinoceros by Peggy's client, Ionesco. Plater references himself in a running gag involving Peggy's ignorance about the geography of Yorkshire as it relates to the two Alans she represents who are based there - Ayckbourn and, yes, this show's playwright. It's hard, too, not to have dipped even briefly into criticism without chuckling at the clever enfolding within the narrative of the definition of a play, a question Greig seems to savour as if she were perhaps trying out chewing over a recipe on a gourmet food show. And the rejection of Falstaff, well-known from Shakespeare's Henry plays, is cunningly applied to Peggy's own life in a deft authorial manoeuvre that works on its own terms, however far the play itself may deviate from cold, hard facts. (In the text, Plater refers to his own script as "bunk but also truthful".)&nbsp;Sailing through it all like the literary galleon that was Peggy is Greig, who may cut a more immediately sympathetic presence than the rather formidable woman pictured on the cover of the published script. But you're left in no doubt at the loss represented by the absence from our midst of a truly independent-minded spirit who on this evidence might have made a good, if blunt, critic had her career taken a different path. The title refers to the phrase deployed when her secretary (a lively Danusia Samal) answers the phone, parrying any and all callers seeking their share of Peggy's stardust. The play follows the acclaimed children's author Roald Dahl over the course of a single afternoon, in the wake of scandal caused by an explicitly antisemitic article. 

The new stage adaptation of *The Greatest Showman* will premiere in Bristol in spring 2026, with a casting search underway for the show's company.

Finally, the wait is over! Following its sold-out run at Southwark Playhouse, the award-winning musical The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is coming to the West End. See it first from October, you'll love every second. 


The Ambassadors Theatre, located in London's vibrant West End, is a cultural hub of activity and creativity. It's known for staging a wide range of performances, from classic Shakespearean plays to cutting-edge new works from emerging playwrights. The building has a rich history, having first opened its doors in 1913. Over the years, it's borne witness to countless breathtaking performances, and was the original home of the infamous play, 'The Mousetrap'. It's famous for its intimate set-up, with 444 seats spread across two levels, with each seat providing an excellent view of the stage. From the ornate architecture both inside and out to the welcoming anticipation in the auditorium as the curtain is about to rise, the Ambassadors Theatre offers a truly unique theatre-going experience.

**How to get to the Ambassadors Theatre:**
The Ambassadors Theatre is easily accessible via public transport. The nearest underground station is Covent Garden on the Piccadilly Line. Leicester Square station is also close, with access to the Northern and Piccadilly line. This area is also well-served by multiple bus routes that stop nearby, making it easy to reach from across the city. If you are driving, the nearest car park is at Chinatown or Trafalgar Square. Remember, the theatre is located within the London Congestion Charge zone.
