The Dorfman Theatre is the smallest of three spaces that make the National Theatre — joined by the Olivier Theatre and the Lyttelton Theatre.
The Dorfman entrance is on the east side of the National Theatre, on Stage Door Avenue, opposite the IBM building. The theatre was formerly known as the Cottesloe Theatre.
Due to the flexibility of the staging, the seating is different for almost every production. The flexible seating system can be raised and lowered in minutes, or the seats ccan be folded to create a flat foor.
Performances can be staged in a conventional format at one end; in “traverse”, lengthways or across the space; or in the round. The theatre is reminiscent of the inn-yards that preceded Shakespeare's stages as performance areas.
