The award-winning musical, London Road, comes to the National Theatre led by the original director Rufus Norris (Small Island). Book London Road tickets on London Theatre.
London Road is a musical that tells the story of the small community of Ipswich, which is rocked by the discovery of the bodies of five women. This piece of verbatim theatre utilizes interviews with the residents of the community. This tale follows a four year period and explores how ordinary people came together in the face of tragedy to rebuild their community. The production expertly balances a touching story with musical numbers for a woodwind ensemble, keyboard, electric guitar, guitar, and percussion, including the songs Good Evening, Welcome, London Road in Bloom, Everyone Is Very Very Nervous, and It Could Be Him.
This impactful show boasts an excellent creative team. In addition to director Rufus Norris, the book is written by Alecky Blythe (Our Generation), it’s composed by Adam Cork (My Master Builder), set and costume design is by Katrina Lindsay (Tammy Faye), music direction is by David Shrubsole (A Tupperware of Ashes), and sound design is by Paul Arditti (Stranger Things: The First Shadow).
London Road premiered at the National Theatre's Cottesloe in April 2011. It was met with critical acclaim, earning a Critics Circle Theatre Award for Best Musical and four Olivier Award nominations.
The Guardian's 5-star review said of the musical, "Conventional musicals, even at their best, take us into a world of fantasy. This miraculously innovative show finds a new way of representing reality.”
The play was adapted for the big screen in 2015 with direction by Rufus Norris and writing by Alecky Blythe and Adam Cork, the same individuals who wrote and directed the original production and this new staging.
