It has been reported that playwright Harold Pinter, aged 71, is suffering from cancer of the oesophagus. and is undergoing a course of chemotherapy.

Pinter used to be a heavy smoker, which is one of the factors thought to contribute to cancer of the oesophagus.

Pinter will still perform in the platform performances of his "Sketches I" and "Sketches II" at the Royal National Theatre on 8th & 11th Feb 02 and will also perform the world première of a new work, "Press Conference". But his agent Judy Daish told BBC News Online that she did not know whether he would take on any projects after that.
