Brendan Coyle to star in intimate production of Conor McPherson’s St Nicholas
Simon Evans will direct a new production of Conor McPherson's play St Nicholas, which will star Brendan Coyle at the Donmar Warehouse's studio space on Dryden Street.
McPherson's one-man play is about a cynical middle-aged theatre critic who falls for an attractive young actress. As he attempts to woo her, he becomes acquainted with a group of modern-day vampires who offer him a deal.
The new production will take place in the intimate studio space on Dryden Street - a stone's throw away from the main house - and sees playwright McPherson and Coyle collaborate for the first time since The Weir in 2013, which saw them both win Olivier Awards. It will run from 10th September to 5th October.
Coyle's other theatre credits include Buried Child and Philadelphia, Here I Come (Wyndham's), Pygmies In The Ruins (Royal Court) and Mojo (Harold Pinter Theatre). He won the Olivier Award for Best Supporting Actor in The Weir, which transferred from the Royal Court to the Ambassadors and the Walter Kerr Theatre in New York.
St Nicholas premiered at the Bush Theatre in 1997, when the playwright was attached to the theatre as part of a writers' scheme, and saw McPherson direct Brian Cox in the nameless lead role. He has since penned plays such as Dublin Carol, Port Authority, Shining City, The Night Alive and Bob Dylan musical Girl from the North Country.
Director Simon Evans' production of Killer Joe is currently running at Trafalgar Studios starring Orlando Bloom. His recent West End credits include The Best Man, The Dazzle, Bug and Fool for One at Found111.
This production of St Nicholas will have designs by Peter McKintosh, lighting by Matt Daw, sound by and Christopher Shutt.
Tickets will be allocated via a ballot which is open for entries now at the official Donmar Warehouse website.
St Nicholas is at the Donmar Warehouse's studio space on Dryden Street from 10th September to 5th October.
