A Doll’s House at Lyric Hammersmith available to stream for one day only
A free screening of last year's Lyric Hammersmith production of A Doll's House is available to stream today. Audiences will be able to watch Tanika Gupta's adaptation of the Ibsen play from 2:30pm today, where it will be online for the rest of the day.
A Doll's House played at the Lyric Hammersmith in September 2019, with the adaptation following Niru - Nora in the original - a young Bengali woman living in Calcutta in a mixed-race marriage with an English colonial bureaucrat. Anjana Vasan plays Niru, nominated for best actress at the Evening Standard Awards for her performance.
The cast also stars Elliot Cowan as Tom Helmer, Arun Ghosh as Masterji, Arinder Sadhra as Uma, Colin Tierney as Dr Rank, Tripti Tripuraneni as Mrs Lahiri, and Assad Zaman as Kaushik Das.
Speaking about today's stream, the Lyric Hammersmith's artistic director Rachel O'Riordan said: "A Doll's House was the first production I programmed and directed as the new [AD] of the Lyric Hammersmith Theatre, it embodies everything I want the Lyric to be for our audience - world-class theatre, a reimagined classic text, showcasing exceptional talent and celebrating our 125 year old theatre. I'm delighted that we're able to share this recording for free so that more people can enjoy this production within our beautiful theatre."
In a review for LondonTheatre.co.uk, Mark Shenton praises the "challenging, forceful new version... The superb Anjana Vasan brilliantly charts her journey from coquettish playfulness to steely resolve. As her husband, Elliot Cowan has the right handsome bluster and a fatal lack of awareness. [Rachel] O'Riordan surrounds them with a fine supporting cast... that bring colour and nuance to this riveting power-play."
The stream will begin from 2:30pm on Wednesday 20th May, and will be available to watch below or via the Lyric Hammersmith's YouTube channel.
