Oliver! in London is based on Charles Dickens's 1838 novel, Oliver Twist. The musical tells the classic tale of a young orphan, Oliver Twist, who is seeking a home and family. Things aren't easy on the streets of London, and soon enough, Oliver becomes part of a gang of child pickpockets. The musical examines the London underworld through a child's perspective and explores themes of friendship, good vs. evil, poverty, and crime.
The musical premiered in the West End in 1960 and was an immediate sensation, running for 2,618 performances. Oliver! has become a beloved work of theatre and has earned numerous awards, including three Tony Awards in 1963 and three Olivier Award nominations in 2010.
This exciting new revival boasts a stellar cast, including Simon Lipkin (Guys and Dolls, The Beaker Girls) as Fagin and Aaron Sidwell (EastEnders, Wicked) as Bill Sikes.
With a captivating story and an exceptional score, including songs such as Food Glorious Food, I'd Do Anything, and Consider Yourself, it's no wonder that over 60 years after it premiered, Oliver! is still a hit with audiences.
Oliver! is a musical with an incredibly talented creative team, including producer Cameron Mackintosh and director and choreographer Matthew Bourne, who have reconceived the show. Jean-Pierre van der Spuy (Lady M, Miss Saigon) is the co-director, Lez Brotherston (The Midnight Bell, Romeo and Juliet) is the designer, and Graham Hurman (Mary Poppins, Les Misérables) is the musical supervisor and conductor.
