About Hello, Dolly!

Don’t miss Imelda Staunton’s long-awaited return to the stage in the revival of Hello, Dolly!. Book Hello, Dolly! tickets in the West End on London Theatre.

Hello, Dolly! is a timeless Broadway classic that follows the adventures of the irrepressible matchmaker Dolly Gallagher Levi, with a knack for orchestrating love in 19th-century New York. When she decides it's high time to find a match for herself, chaos and hilarity ensue.

Multi-award-winning Imelda Staunton has earned critical acclaim for her performances both on screen and on stage. Her stage work, including roles in productions like Gypsy and Sweeney Todd, for which she won Olivier Awards. Staunton is known on screen for her memorable portrayals, including Dolores Umbridge in the Harry Potter series and Queen Elizabeth II in Netflix’s The Crown.

Hello, Dolly! dates back to John Oxenford's 1935 play A Day Well Spent. Its journey includes adaptations like an 1842 German musical and Thornton Wilder's farcical play The Merchant of Yonkers. Despite initial challenges, Wilder's revised version, titled The Matchmaker, became a Broadway sensation.

The musical, crafted by Jerry Herman and Michael Stewart, underwent title changes before settling on Hello, Dolly! During its original Broadway run, it achieved remarkable success, running for 2,844 performances and securing a then record-breaking 10 Tony Awards. The timeless score by Herman and Stewart includes classics like “Hello, Dolly!”, “It Only Takes a Moment,” “Elegance,” “Before the Parade Passes By,” “Ribbons Down My Back,” and “Put On Your Sunday Clothes.”
