The latest original British musical to hit the West End, Kathy & Stella Solve a Murder! pays homage to the contemporary craze for true crime podcasting and explores the themes of loneliness, obsessive fandom, and female friendship. In a 4-star review at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the Evening Standard stated that it “really is one of the most purely fun shows at the Fringe, and is crying out for a London transfer. It took a while to crack the murder mystery musical, but finally theydunnit, and theydunnit really well.”
Co-produced by Fleabag producer Francesca Moody, the show’s music and lyrics are written by Matthew Floyd Jones, one half of popular musical double act Frisky & Mannish. Co-lyricist and book writer Jon Brittain is most acclaimed for his play Rotterdam at Theatre503, which won an Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in an Affiliate Theatre in 2017 and transferred Off Broadway. The show is co-directed by Brittan and Fabian Aloise (Sunset Boulevard, The SpongeBob Musical).
The production stars Bronté Barbé (Newsies) as Kathy and Rebekah Hinds (Oklahoma!) as Stella, with Imelda Warren-Green (A Very, Very Bad Cinderella) as Erica. Further casting is to be announced. In a 4-star review, Time Out commented that the show is “brilliant in its depiction of friendship between nerdy female outsiders. Hinds and Barbé have wonderful chemistry together”.
