The shortest month of the year has whizzed past us, and March is finally here. The sun shines a little brighter, the days are a little longer, and there’s plenty of exciting shows to look forward to. Leave Greek tragedy expectations at the door in Daniel Fish’s (*Oklahoma!*) arresting take on the Sophocles classic. A shaven-headed, Bikini Kill T-shirt-wearing Brie Larson (*Room*) brings feminist rage to the stage as the titular daughter of Agamemnon, who is out to avenge her father’s death at the hands of her mother, Clytemnestra (a commanding Stockard Channing). In Canadian poet Anne Carson’s stripped-back translation, Larson half-sings, half-screams her emotional torment, enlisting her brother Orestes (Patrick Vaill) to commit matricide, with predictably bloody results.

*Elektra* is a play by Sophocles that was likely written sometime between 420 BC and 414 BC, as it has similarities with *Philoctetes* (409 BC) and *Oedipus at Colonus* (406 BC). This new translation is by award-winning poet Anne Carson, who also translated Sophocles' *Antigone*. Carson has published over twenty books, and among the many awards she's earned include the T.S. Elliot Prize, the Governor General's Award for English-language poetry, and the Lannan Literary Award. 

*Elektra* in London boasts an exceptional creative team led by director Daniel Fish (*Oklahoma!*). Annie-B Parson (*Here Lies Love*) is the choreographer, Jeremy Herbert (*Hamlet*) is the scenic designer, Adam Silverman (*The Glass Menagerie*) is the lighting designer, Doey Lüthi (*over and over vorbeinicht vorbei*) is the costume designer, Max and Ben Ringham (*A Doll's House*) are the sound designers, and music is by Ted Hearne (*Place*).

## What to watch for

- Tales of Orestes' revenge were very popular in Greek tragedies; in fact, Euripides also wrote a play called *Electra*. 
- Some of the events of *Elektra* were also referenced in Homer's *Odyssey*. 
- Anne Carson has received both the MacArthur 'Genius' Grant and the Guggenheim Fellowship. 
- Max and Ben Ringham were nominated for an Olivier Award in 2023 for their work on *Prima Facie*.

Fresh off its sell-out run at Kiln Theatre, the moving drama *Retrograde*, based on the true story of young Sidney Poitier 10 years before becoming the first Black man to win an Oscar Award for Best Actor, comes to Apollo Theatre. Book *Retrograde* tickets on London Theatre. 

*Retrograde* is a play by Olivier award-nominated playwright Ryan Calais Cameron (*For Black Boys Who Have Considered Suicide When the Hue Gets Too Heavy*). This show, set in 1950s Hollywood, transports audiences to a time in American history when the civil rights movement and McCarthyism intersected, creating racist paranoia. 

The play tells of young Sidney Poitier, who goes to the office of NBC lawyer Mr. Parks, believing he is signing a contract to launch his big break. However, he is instead questioned on his affiliation with Martin Luther King and other political activists. He is given an ultimatum—sign an oath of loyalty to America and denounce the actor, activist, and singer Paul Robeson, whom he admires, or he will be blacklisted and won't get the part he's dreamed of. 

*Retrograde* in London stars Ivanno Jeremiah (*Constellations*) as Sidney Poitier, Stanley Townsend (Netflix's *Kaos*) as Mr. Parks, and Oliver Johnstone (*Antigone*) as Bobby. The trio are reprising their roles from the critically acclaimed run at Kiln Theatre. 

The talented creative team includes direction by Kiln Theatre's Artistic Director Amit Sharma, design by Frankie Bradshaw (*Ballet Shoes*), lighting by Amy Mae (*The Frogs*), and sound by Beth Duke (*The Importance of Being Earnest*).

The Apollo Theatre opened on 21 Feb. 1901. The theatre is named after the Greek god of the arts, and was built to house musical theatre productions.

The late 20th-century saw many plays at the Apollo Theatre, including *Separate Tables* starring John Mills, *Mrs Klein* starring [Zoe Wanamaker](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/actor-profile/zoe-wanamaker), and *A Madhouse in God* starring [Vanessa Redgrave](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/actor-profile/vanessa-redgrave).

During a performance of the Olivier Award winning play [*The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time*](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/show/the-curious-incident-of-the-dog-in-the-night-time) on 19 Dec. 2013, a large section of the ceiling collapsed, potentially caused by the heavy rain London had experienced that week, and 88 people were injured. 

Recent shows at the Apollo Theatre include *Jerusalem* starring Mark Rylance, and the West End premiere of *Everybody's Talking About Jamie.*

The auditorium has three levels – Stalls, Dress Circle and Grand Circle. The Stalls seats offer excellent views of the stage. Views in the outer seats are hindered by the overhang of the Dress Circle.

The Dress Circle seats may offer little legroom and little raking in the seating. The last two rows of seats sit on a higher level and offer better views than those in front.

The Grand Circle has a shallow ranke. The last two rows of seats are also built up higher.

Nick Hytner’s production of Shakespeare’s history play illustrates the timelessness of its central battle between the “born to rule” Plantagenet monarch and his arguably more capable adversary (and cousin) Henry Bolingbroke (here styled Bullingbrook). Hytner recently told The Guardian that the play asks the basic question: “What do you do when a ruler is absolutely inadequate? How do you get rid of the rightful leader?” In a modern world of political volatility, the Bard’s themes feel increasingly prescient. The drama stars Jonathan Bailey (*Bridgerton*) who earnt his Shakespeare stripes in Hytner’s production of *Othello* in 2013 and Chichester Festival Theatre’s *King Lear* (opposite Ian McKellen) in 2017.

Throughout history, numerous critically acclaimed actors have played the title role in *Richard II*. Notably, John Gieguld first played the role in 1929 at the Old Vic Theatre, and he reprised the role again in 1937 and 1953. His performance helped bring *Richard II* back into the theatre world after the show’s popularity decreased in the early twentieth century. Other actors who have played the role of the infamous king include Maurice Evans, Paul Scofield, Ian McKellen, Fiona Shaw, and David Tennant. Now, Critic Choice Award-winning actor Jonathan Bailey joins the long list of legendary actors who have played the role.

## What to watch for

- There have been a variety of film adaptations of *Richard II*, including the 2003 television movie, *Richard II*, starring Mark Rylance. 
- The first episode of the  BBC television series *The Hollow Crown* was called *Richard II*; it was based on Shakespeare’s play and starred Ben Whishaw. 
- In 1995, Fiona Shaw played the role of *Richard II* in the play at the National Theatre. Having a woman in the role caused quite a stir, as some loved it while others were wholly against it. 
- It is hard to pinpoint precisely when *Richard II* was written, but on 29 August 1597, the bookseller Andrew Wise entered the play into the Register of the Stationers Company.

Based on the life of King Richard II, who ruled England from 1377 to 1399, *Richard II* is the first in a tetralogy of historical plays, followed by *Henry IV, Part 1, Henry IV, Part 2*, and *Henry V*.

Through the centuries, the classic play has been staged numerous times worldwide. John Gielgud's portrayal of Richard II at the Old Vic Theatre in 1929 is considered one of the most notable performances of the role. Since then, the role of Richard II has been played by many exceptional actors, including Maurice Evans, Mark Rylance, and Ian McKellen, as well as Fiona Shaw at the National Theatre in 1995.

In a high-camp reimaging of the horror classic, Count Dracula is a Gen Z pansexual having an existential crisis. After receiving a visit from timid estate agent Jonathan Harker, the Count leaves his Transylvanian lair to get a taste of some English beauty – in the form of Jonathan’s fiancé! Dianne Pilkington (*The Wizard of Oz*) and Charlie Stemp (*Kiss Me, Kate*) are among the cast sinking their fangs into the vampy wordplay.

The UK premiere of *Dracula, A Comedy of Terrors,* transforms Bram Stoker's horror classic into a gender-bending laugh-out-loud production. Book D*racula, A Comedy of Terrors* tickets on London Theatre. 

Following its hit Off-Broadway run in 2023 and 2024, *Dracula, A Comedy of Terrors* comes to the Menier Chocolate Factory stage.

*Dracula, A Comedy of Terrors* is a play by Gordon Greenberg and Steve Rosen (*Crime and Punishment, A Comedy*); the tale was first produced as a radio play in 2020. They transformed the beloved horror classic, Dracula, into a campy, fast-paced show the likes of *Rocky Horror Picture Show* and *Young Frankenstein*. The tale brings audiences to the dangerous Transylvania mountains and tells the story of Count Dracula, who has been reimagined as a Gen Z pansexual in the midst of an existential crisis. 

In a statement leading up to the Off-Broadway premiere, Greenberg said, "In re-reading *Dracula*, we were surprised and intrigued by the boldness with which Stoker, a closeted gay man in Victorian England, plays with sexuality and gender norms." 

The play boasts five talented actors who quickly switch between costumes and roles throughout the production. James Daly (*Wendy and Peter Pan*) returns to the role of Dracula after originating the role Off-Broadway. The cast also includes Safeena Ladha (*The Great Gatsby*), Dianne Pilkington (*The Wizard of Oz*), Charlie Stemp (*Kiss Me, Kate*) and Sebastien Torkia (*La Cage Aux Folles*).

Ryan Calais Cameron, whose extraordinary play [*For Blacks Boys Who Have Considered Suicide When the Hue Gets Too Heavy*](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/show/27460-for-black-boys-who-have-considered-suicide-when-the-hue-gets-too-heavy) has become a rare new-writing West End hit, now returns with a new work at the [Kiln Theatre](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/kiln-theatre). [*Retrograde*](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/show/27673-retrograde) dramatises a fascinating, little-known piece of history concerning the trailblazing African-American actor Sidney Poitier.

In this 90-minute, real-time piece set in the 1950s, Sidney is on the verge of his big break. He’d won praise for his role as a student in movie *Blackboard Jungle*, but since then the only parts he’s been offered are servants or thugs. Now he has the opportunity to star in a big network TV movie, playing a proper meaty role — but there’s a terrible catch.

Sidney thinks he’s just come into the office of NBC lawyer Mr. Parks to sign his contract. Instead, he’s questioned about his affiliation with campaigning figures like Martin Luther King and Harry Belafonte (who, coincidentally, passed away this week). There’s a dawning horror for Sidney as he realises he’s been spied on, or that the FBI have an informant close to him.

Parks demands that he sign a loyalty oath and publicly denounce the popular Black entertainer Paul Robeson, whose political activism has put him in the crosshairs of Senator McCarthy and his Red Scare witch hunt. If Sidney refuses, he will be blacklisted. Or, as the hideous Parks has it, he’ll be “Black-blacklisted” — condemned twice, for his race and his supposed communist sympathies. No matter the hypocrisy that his constitutional rights are being violated in the name of beating the anti-democratic Soviet Union.

Cameron powerfully conveys how much this weighs on Sidney. On the one hand, there’s his long struggle to succeed in the industry, and to support his family (he has two children and another on the way); on the other, Robeson has inspired him and countless others, so it would be a monstrous betrayal to his community. Could he live with himself if he sold out?

The third player in this fraught game is the squirrelly screenwriter Bobby. He too is on the verge of a much-needed career break with this movie, and he’s proud to have cast and championed Sidney. He also proclaims his allyship in cringey proclamations like “I am the blackest white guy you know”. But his trumpeted white liberal values waver in the face of Parks’s threats. 

The opening of the play features just Parks and Bobby, and is by far the weakest section, full of sub-Mamet macho bluster and power games. More interesting is how designer Frankie Bradshaw signals their ultimate white-male alliance via their matching striped ties and slicked-back hair. Bobby might think he’s the progressive one, his own man, but he’s about to discover his limitations. 

However, the most riveting figure is of course Sidney himself, brilliantly played by Ivanno Jeremiah. Initially, he behaves with a cautious politeness, all too aware that he’s being held to an unfair higher standard, even as Parks patronises, bullies, and goads him. Not that he’s a pushover: there’s always a sharp intelligence, a cool dignity in Jeremiah’s nuanced performance. 

He’s tremendous, too, in the more emotional latter stages — physically shaking, tears forming as he faces an impossible choice. We can feel the burden he always carries, having to act differently in America because he’s expected to “remember” his lower status, as opposed to his upbringing in the Bahamas where he could just be a man, not a Black man. And now must he surrender his soul, all in the name of “American values”?

There’s a massive cathartic release — for us and for him — when Sidney finally allows himself to get angry, and the passionate intensity of Jeremiah’s delivery makes a didactic speech feel authentic and personal. Elsewhere, though, Cameron’s script is simply too blunt, and he weakens the dramatic tension by making Parks such a cartoonish villain: not just racist and misogynist, but a totally soulless opportunist.

Despite a strong effort from Daniel Lapaine, by the end he ceases to be believable altogether; he is more a foul-mouthed vehicle for vile, cynical thought than a person, so he unbalances the drama. But Ian Bonar has better luck with the well-meaning if fainthearted Bobby, who vacillates between self-interest and sacrifice. 

Bradshaw provides an effective retro office set for Amit Sharma’s taut production, complete with an Abbott and Costello poster and a starburst clock — whose ticking fills those tense silent passages where time is running out for Sidney to decide. And, ironically, the bigoted Parks puts on jazz records when he wants to celebrate. 

That in itself encapsulates Cameron’s provocative ideas around the intersection of politics, culture, and race, in a blistering piece that finds plenty of contemporary parallels in a potent historical tale.

'Retrograde' review – Ivanno Jeremiah is riveting as a conflicted Sidney Poitier

The Kiln Theatre, located in the heart of Kilburn in North West London, is a pillar in the world of London theatre.
