In recent times, we’ve all been glued to our phones. They’re not just devices to call, text someone, or play games — phones are our lifeline. When someone is calling you, they may deliver good news. In *The Human Voice* play, audiences meet a young woman. She’s speaking to her lover down the telephone. They’ve been together for five years, so she’s expecting her partner to propose and enjoy a lifetime of wedded bliss. So when the unnamed man says he’s going to marry another woman, he leaves the lady on the end of the line — the lady we see — broken. For almost sixty minutes, the young man speaks, shouts and cries into the telephone, marking a goodbye to her departing lover. 

Rather than a two-person play, writer Jean Cocteau used the telephone as a means of exploring human needs. Audiences never meet the man, so it’s up to the theatreoger to conjure their own impression of the unnamed character too, adding to the tension. Even though *The Human Voice* is nearly a century old, this harrowing monologue captures the timeless essence of love and loneliness, amped up during the global pandemic.

At the start of *The Human Voice*, a young woman speaks to her lover on the telephone. They’ve been together for five years, so she’s just expecting this to be a typical phonecall. When the unnamed man declares his plans to marry another woman, our central character is shaken. Crying into the telephone, her heart breaks over the course of one last conversation with her former lover. In a time of hyperconnectivity and loneliness, The Human Voice explores the importance of love and being in touch with your own emotions. A lot can happen over the course of an hour.

[Ruth Wilson](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/actor-profile/ruth-wilson) stars in the one-woman play for *The Human Voice* London performances. She’s a two-time Olivier Award-winning actress for *A Streetcar Named Desire* and *Anna Christie*, and has previously worked with director Ivo van Hove on *Hedda Gabler* at the National Theatre.

*The Human Voice* play is by the early 20th-century French poet and dramatist, Jean Cocteau. During his career, Cocteau penned plays and poems such as *Les Enfants terribles*, and even turned his hand to directing films. *The Human Voice* is one of Cocteau’s most well-known works, and has been adapted into films: a 2014 adaptation starring Sophia Loren, and a 2020 adaptation featuring Tilda Swinton.

Sit in silence in a busy room, and you’ll hear a lot. The low hum of people talking around you. The flickering lights as they twitch overhead. The unexplainable, disconcerting noises that keep you on edge. Eventually, a voice drowns out all the sounds around you. 

You listen. You pay attention. You might learn something. But when everyone tunes into one person speaking, what happens next? At first, it’s a slightly awkward realisation for people in the room, but a few minutes in, you’ll realise that you’ve probably had a similar conversation before, and the stranger becomes human.

In Jean Cocteau’s 1930 play *The Human Voice*, audiences listen to a woman’s final phone call with her lover of five years. At first, She — an unnamed female character played here by [Ruth Wilson](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/actor-profile/ruth-wilson) — is just a voice, and you don’t see anyone onstage for the first three minutes. As She unravels mentally and physically during the call, we get a sense of her "human" qualities, and the end result is breathtaking. 

Ivo van Hove directs the two-time Olivier-winning actress in this heartwrenching monodrama, and Wilson’s captivating performance soars in a relevant isolation monologue. “I am not acting, you know me I’m incapable of doing that” says She, and *The Human Voice* is anything but that — dare I use the cliché to say it's an acting masterclass. 

Van Hove’s thought-provoking directorial choices round off Wilson’s statuesque performance: She dances to Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies” as she learns of her newfound independence. She barks like a wolf. She pulls back the glass and teeters on the balcony. By the end, She mimics Edvard Munch’s ‘The Scream’ painting. 

Eventually, Wilson puts the telephone down and speaks to herself, and the final monologue hits the heart. In the final 15 minutes, She speaks in a stream of consciousness, wrestling with her emotions in a naturalistic way that resonates with anyone who has dealt with difficult decisions in the past two years.

On the day I saw *The Human Voice*, I dealt with a variety of personal emotions akin to what She feels, so maybe I’m viewing the play from an exaggerated perspective of grief, loss, and heartache. But no matter where you're coming from, Wilson’s striking performance connects — even when you can’t see her, you’re lost in the rhythm of her voice until we’re disconnected at the final moment. 

Jan Versweyveld’s simplistic yet effective design uses a neutral palette to great effect. The stone-coloured walls are flexible, moving like a speaker with sound flowing at the slightest touch. Muted lighting design allows She to step into the light in order to be seen — could She find paradise in another life? 

Versweyveld’s design restricts the theatre though — the glass screen and black walls gives the production a television-inspired quality, but it shrinks the Harold Pinter stage by two thirds, rendering some seats inaccessible. 

*The Human Voice* has its flaws. Even though the play clocks in at just over an hour, it occasionally draws out too long. But then, nobody can say that every conversation they’ve had went well, so it's only right that *The Human Voice* itself doesn't always work. 

*The Human Voice* speaks to a world where we stay in touch with ourselves, both physically and emotionally. And there’s only 31 performances in the West End, so you’ve not got long to listen. Make sure you tune in.

For those driving, the MasterPark at Whitcomb Street and NCP at Denman Street are the nearest parking options.

The Harold Pinter Theatre opened on 15 Oct. 1881 as a comic opera house. Its name on opening was the Royal Comedy Theatre, though its ‘Royal’ epithet was dropped in 1884.

The Comedy Theatre helped establish the New Watergate Club in 1956, a society which helped overturn the stage censorship enforced by the Lord Chamberlain’s Office. The formation of the Club meant that the plays banned by the Government could be performed at this venue as it was now being run as a private club rather than a commercial entity. Notable plays in this category include Arthur Miller’s *A View from the Bridge* and Tennessee Williams’ *Cat On A Hot Tin Roof*. The censorship was finally overturned in 1968. 

Harold Pinter's works were often performed here: *The Homecoming*, *The Caretaker*, *Moonlight*, *No-Man’s Land* and *The Hothouse* all enjoyed successful runs, and Pinter directed a production of *The Old Masters* here in 2004. After his death, it was thought fitting to bestow the honour of naming a theatre after him, and the name was officially changed on 13 Oct. 2011 to the Harold Pinter Theatre. The Ambassador Theatre Group own the Harold Pinter Theatre.

## Harold Pinter Theatre Seating Information

The auditorium has four levels – Stalls, Dress Circle, Royal Circle and Balcony. The top three levels are a horseshoe shape around the stalls.

The Stalls is a single block of seats, and offers good sightlines. Some seats are impaired by supportive pillars and the overhang of the Dress Circle.

The Dress Circle doesn’t offer a great raking in the seating, but the view is not affected by the overhang of the Royal Circle. 

The Royal Circle seats curve towards the stage more noticeably than the Dress Circle.

The Balcony feels very high in this theatre.
