'Spirited Away' to open at the London Coliseum in April 2024
The Japanese-language production of Studio Ghibli's Oscar-winning film Spirited Away will make its European premiere at the West End's largest theatre.
Spirited Away is coming to London’s West End for a strictly limited season. Following a sell-out tour of Japan in 2022, the original Japanese production will begin performances in April 2024, with exact dates to be announced.
Created by the renowned animator and director Hayao Miyazaki, the story has been re-imagined for the stage by Olivier and Tony Award-winning director John Caird (Les Misérables). The original cast, including Kanna Hashimoto and Mone Kamishiraishi, will perform in this production.
“I am proud and delighted to present the original Japanese stage production of Spirited Away at the Coliseum Theatre next year." Caird said in a statement, "We had a wonderful time creating the show in 2022 and I’m so happy now to be spiriting away a British audience into Hayao Miyazaki’s magical world."
Based on the Oscar-winning film, this stage adaptation tells the story of Chihiro, who stumbles into a world filled with fantastic spirits ruled by the sorceress Yubaba. When her parents are turned into pigs, Chihiro must embark upon a quest to free her parents and return to the normal world.
The production will be presented in Japanese with English captions. A live orchestra will bring Miyazaki's masterpiece to life playing the sensational film score by Joe Hisaishi. The creative team also includes a spectacular set design by Jon Bausor, intricate puppet designs by Toby Olié, choreography by Shigehiro Ide, and extravagant costumes by Sachiko Nakahara.
