Daniel Fish reimagines *Oklahoma!* for the 21st century — this is Rodgers and Hammerstein’s musical like you've never seen it before. *Oklahoma!* tickets are available on London Theatre now.

The *Oklahoma!* musical is based on Lynn Riggs’s 1931 play, *Green Grow the Lilacs.* Set at the turn of the state formation, the musical follows cowboy Curly McClain and farmhand Jud Fry as they try to impress farmgirl Laurey Williams. As the courtship rivalry intensifies, the love triangle is further locked in — who will win Laurey’s heart? At the same time, there’s also romances between Ado Annie and cowboy Will Parker, and plenty of geographical discussions. Can the farmers and the cowmen be friends? 

Daniel Fish adapted *Oklahoma!* for a modern-day audience to high acclaim: *Oklahoma!* won two Olivier Awards: Best Musical Revival, and Best Actor in a Musical (Arthur Darvill). The show also received Olivier nominations for Best Actress in a Supporting Role in a Musical (Liza Sadovy and Marisha Wallace), Best Actress in a Musical (Anoushka Lucas), Best Sound Design (Drew Levy), Best Original Score (Daniel Kluger & Nathan Koci).

When [*Oklahoma!* played at the Young Vic, we said](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/reviews/oklahoma-review-young-vic): “director Daniel Fish’s production showcases the seductive elements of the story about the divisions in a local community on the brink of the titular territory’s statehood.” All the original *Oklahoma!* songs feature in the musical, such as “Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’”, “People Will Say We’re in Love” and “Cain’t Say No." Even though none of the original words have changed in this adaptation, there's a darker, grittier feel. 

### When was the *Oklahoma* musical written? 

Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II penned *Oklahoma!* in 1943 — the show changed the history of musical theatre. It's considered to be the first show of its kind that incorporate songs and dances to move the story forward. The musical also saw Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II collaborate for the first time. The pair worked well together, later creating *South Pacific,* *The King and I* and *The Sound of Music.*

This isn’t your typical *Oklahoma!* in London. A seven-piece band play reorchestrated arrangements of all the musical theatre classics, like “People Will Say We’re In Love,” “Many a New Day,” as well as an electrifying 15-minute dream ballet. 

Similar to Oklahoma’s lengthy transition to becoming a state, this *Oklahoma!* musical journey to the stage took many years. Daniel Fish’s adaptation started out at Bard SummerSpace in 2015, but quickly gained momentum with an Off-Broadway run at St Ann’s Warehouse. The show then transferred to the Circle in the Square Theatre on Broadway, picking up eight Tony Award nominations. 

## What To Watch For:

- Lynn Rigg's 1931 play, *Green Grow the Lilacs,* inspired Rodgers and Hammerstein to create their debut musical. While *Green Grow the Lilacs* only ran for 64 performances, *Oklahoma!* earned Rodgers and Hammerstein an honorary Pulitzer Prize, and regular revivals on Broadway and in the West End.
- Two of the *Oklahoma!* cast members continue with the musical in the West End. Patrick Vaill and Patrick Davis played Jud Fry and Will Parker on Broadway, in the Young Vic, and now in the West End.

It has a strong reputation for high-quality drama, which is part of its charm and attractiveness. The exterior contains a beautiful portico in the classical style, while the interior is adorned with luxurious ornate plasterwork. Over its history, Wyndham's Theatre has hosted a wide variety of productions, including 'God of Carnage', 'Art', and 'Donkeys' Years'.

**Getting to the Wyndham's Theatre:**

Wyndham's Theatre is easily accessible by multiple modes of transport. The closest Underground station, Leicester Square, is just a two-minute walk away, offering connections via the Northern and Piccadilly lines. Several bus stop directly outside the theatre, including routes 24, 29 and 176. Limited on-street paid parking is available. National car park at St Martin’s Lane Hotel offers a discount to theatre patrons, but the venue encourages sustainable transport options where possible.

Wyndham's Theatre - TodayTix

The Wyndham’s Theatre opened on 16 Nov. 1899. The theatre was commissioned by Charles Wyndham who also managed the [Criterion Theatre.](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/criterion-theatre) 

The Wyndham’s welcomed its first long-running production – Sandy Wilson’s musical *The Boyfriend* which opened on 14 Jan. 1959 and ran for over 2,000 performances. Another successful musical came to the theatre in 1972, the Roundhouse’s production of Stephen Schwartz’s *Godspell*, which ran for three years. The theatre has seen many notable actors grace the stage, including Alec Guinness, [Vanessa Redgrave](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/actor-profile/vanessa-redgrave), Diana Rigg and Madonna.

In May 2005, the Wyndham’s Theatre was bought by Cameron Mackintosh through his company Delfont Mackintosh Theatres. The theatre was renovated in 2008 and plays regularly run for limited engagements at the Wyndham's Theatre.

## Wyndham's Theatre Seating Information

The auditorium has four levels - Stalls, Royal Circle, Grand Circle and Balcony.

In the Stalls, the front four rows of seating are not raked, but other than that the seats in the Stalls offer excellent views of the stage.

Only the seats in Row G of the Royal Circle are affected by the overhang of the Grand Circle. Seats are well raked, offering great views of the stage.

The Grand Circle is set very high in this theatre.

The Balcony is set behind and above the Grand Circle, so does feel far from the stage, but the view is unobstructed.
