Matthew Modine to play Atticus Finch in ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’
The Golden Globe-winning actor returns to the West End.
Matthew Modine and Cecilia Noble will join the To Kill a Mockingbird West End cast next month. To Kill a Mockingbird performances are currently scheduled at the Gielgud Theatre through 4 Feb. 2023. Book To Kill a Mockingbird tickets on London Theatre.
Modine takes over the role of Atticus Finch from Richard Coyle. Modine is best known for starring in And the Band Played On and What the Deaf Man Heard, as well as a Golden Globe-winning performance in Short Cuts. Modine made his West End debut in Resurrection Blues at the Old Vic in 2006. He is recently known for playing Dr. Martin “Papa” Brenner in Stranger Things. The Olivier-nominated actress Cecilia Noble will take over the role of Calpurnia. Anna Munden will play Scout Finch, joined by Sam Mitchell as Jem Finch, Ellis Howard as Dill Harris, and Jason Hughes as Bob Ewell.
The full To Kill a Mockingbird company from 21 November includes Harry Attwell, Helen Belbin, Niall Buggy, Cheryl Burniston, Colin R Campbell, Jack Crumlin, Alan Drake, Max Ferguson, Phillipa Flynn, John Hastings, Rebecca Hayes, Simon Hepworth, Niamh James, Julie Legrand, Nigel Lister, Tom Mannion, Tiwai Muza, Itoya Osagiede, Jude Owusu, Oyin Oyjia, David Sturzaker, George Telfer and Natasha Williams. Musicians Jack Benjamin, Ciyo Brown, and Candida Caldicot, continue with the production.
What is To Kill a Mockingbird about?
Set in 1930s small-town Alabama, To Kill a Mockingbird play follows lawyer Atticus Finch and his family as he defends the wrongfully accused Tom Robinson. To Kill a Mockingbird explores justice and racial tension through the eyes of Atticus's daughter Scout. Aaron Sorkin adapts Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird on stage.
