Mark Rylance to read Harold Pinter’s Nobel lecture as part of upcoming season

Actor Mark Rylance will read Harold Pinter's Nobel Prize speech as part of Jamie Lloyd's upcoming season of the playwright's short plays at the theatre that bears his name.

Pinter was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2005, and he delivered the speech, titled 'Art, Truth and Politics', upon accepting the award.

Rylance, who is set to appear in Shakespeare's Globe's upcoming production of Othello later this summer, will perform the speech at 6pm before the performances of  One for the Road, The New World Order, Mountain Language and Ashes to Ashes on 2nd October, and The Lover and The Collection on 4th October. Tickets are £10, with money being donated to Stop the War.

 On performing in aid of the charity, Rylance said: "Stopping our involvement in War is more important than Brexit. It would be more fun than winning the World Cup. It would solve many of our problems and make us a true world leader. We as a people, at our best, are nothing, if not diplomatic. We have to be. We live on a small island. It is our gift.

"Harold Pinter was one of our earliest supporters and his Nobel Lecture is a revelation. Here is a man passionately dedicated to truth in the theatre and the world. It will be an honour to speak his words."

Lloyd, who has taken on the task of producing all of Pinter's one-act plays for the season, said: "I am delighted to welcome Mark Rylance to our special season, performing in aid of his chosen charity, the Stop the War Coalition.

"This is sure to be a powerful evening; one of the all-time greatest actors speaking the provocative and profound words of one of the all-time greatest playwrights and political agitators."
