‘Hairspray’ now opening at London Coliseum in June
Michael Ball and Marisha Wallace will still star in the musical revival.
For a third rescheduling, new dates have been posted for Hairspray at the London Coliseum. The revival will now begin performances on 22 June — the day after theatres can open with no social distancing — to 29 September.
The Hairspray company remains the same as previously billed, with Lizzie Bea making her West End debut as Tracy Turnblad. Michael Ball reprises his Olivier Award-winning turn as Edna Turnblad, with Marisha Wallace as Motormouth Maybelle, Les Dennis as Wilbur Turnblad, and Rita Simons as Velma von Tussle.
The full cast is completed by Jonny Amies, Georgia Anderson, Kimani Arthur, Dermot Canavan, Lori Haley Fox, Mari McGinlay, Ashley Samuels, Michael Vinsen, Imogen Bailey, Pearce Barron, Jordan Benjamin, Nicholas Collier, Joel Cooper, Luke George, Christopher Gopaul, Winny Herbert, Chris Howell, Lily Laight, Hannah Grace Lawson, Madeleine Lawton, Holly Liburd, Will Luckett, Mireia Mambo, Kody Mortimer, Robyn Rose, Tinovimbanashe Sibanda, Kibong Tanji, Amy West and Natalie Woods.
New company members have been added from 20 July, the day that Hairspray reopens. The Hairspray cast now includes Gavin Alex Wood, Shakira Simpson, Dominic Sibanda, Charles Ruhrmund, Samuel Nicholas, Emma Louise Jones, Esme Laudat, Georgia Iudica-Davies, Alice Baker, Philip Catchpole, Chanel Edwards-Frederick and Michael Kent.
Set in 1960s Baltimore, Hairspray sees a plucky teenager Tracy Turnblad earn a coveted place on The Corny Collins Show. Dancing on television, she quickly becames recognisable in the local community, but sparks outrage with her seemingly progressive political views. Can Tracy unite different groups together and win the crown?
Hairspray features music and lyrics by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman including "Good Morning, Baltimore," "Big, Blonde and Beautiful," and "You Can't Stop the Beat." Jack O'Brien directs, with choreography by Jerry Mitchell.
The Hairspray cast performed on the Britain's Got Talent finale last year to celebrate musical theatre, along with The Phantom of the Opera and Les Miserables.
Hairspray is at the London Coliseum from 22 June - 29 September.
