Andy Sandberg to direct UK premiere of 'Operation Epsilon'
This award-winning play tells the once-classified story of how some nuclear scientists learn they've been beaten to the atomic bomb whilst being held captive.
The UK premiere of Alan Brody's Operation Epsilon will play at the Southwark Playhouse Elephant this autumn.
Directed by Andy Sandberg, who led the world premiere in the U.S., this production opens on 20 September, and runs until 21 October to celebrate its 10th anniversary.
"It’s been an honour to collaborate with Alan Brody on this play’s development and extraordinary journey for over a decade now. It feels particularly fitting to present Operation Epsilon in the country where the play is set, and the subject is more relevant today than ever as we grapple with the inherent conflict between scientific advancement and its ethical consequences.” Director Andy Sandberg said in a statement.
Operation Epsilon tells the true story of ten German nuclear scientists who were held captive by British and American forces at the end of World War II. This award-winning play is inspired by real secretly recorded conversations that were classified for decades.
“The whole process of writing Operation Epsilon from its very inception has been a labor of love. I'm thrilled that the play will now have a life in London, and especially at this time in history.” Playwright Alan Brody said in a statement.
Sandberg became the youngest producer in history to win a Tony Award in 2009. His previous works include Hair, The Best Man, and The Realistic Joneses.
He helms the creative team that includes set designer Janie Howland, costumer designer and associate set designer Beth Colley, lighting designer Clancy Flynn, sound designer Chris Drohan, and casting director Lucy Casson.
Casting is yet to be announced.
