Following performances at the National Theatre, Lyndsey Turner directs an urgent retelling of Arthur Miller’s Salem witch trials play *The Crucible* at the Gielgud Theatre. *The Crucible* tickets are available on London Theatre now.

While *The Crucible* play isn’t based on a true story per se, it’s inspired by the hundreds of witch trials that took place in 17th-century New England. Communities were fearful of people behaving in unexplainable ways, so deemed them to be “witches.” 

Even though *The Crucible* follows life in 17th-century America, Arthur Miller wrote the play as a reflection of McCarthyism, an era of 1950s America that saw the United States government persecuting those for being communists. As you watch the play, you’ll inevitably spot the parallels between 17th-century history and the hysteria surrounding 1950s McCarthy investigations and the House of Un-American Activities Committee.

### What is *The Crucible* about?

*The Crucible* play is set in Salem, Massachusetts. A group of young women are spotted “dancing” with a Black slave named Tituba. But were they really dancing, or did suspicious activity take place in the woods? Mass hysteria takes over the town, with women accused of being witches left, right, and centre.

As the girls struggle to find their words in court, it’s quickly apparent that in a society with deeprooted and internalised misogyny, nobody will speak for them. Accusing everyone leaves the town in tatters, leading to a lack of trust. Events lead to mass arrests, torture, and hangings. Ultimately, *The Crucible* play is all about power, dominance, and standing up for what you believe in.

As you watch *The Crucible* in London, you’ll inevitably spot the parallels between 17th-century history and the hysteria of 1950s investigations. When women are called up to the stand for "suspected" witchcraft in the play, they say what people want others to hear, rather than staying true to themselves. 

In 17th-century New England, communities were fearful of people behaving in unexplainable ways. Fast forward 250 years, and influential politicians instigated the Hollywood Blacklist: a roster of professionals believed to be Communists or sympathisers. Little changes in history.

Lyndsey Turner directed *The Crucible* at the National Theatre in summer 2022, picking up an Olivier Award nomination for Best Revival. The American drama now runs at the Gielgud Theatre with a new cast, led by Brian Gleeson and Caitlin FitzGerald as John and Elizabeth Proctor. 

## What to Watch For: 

- Milly Alcock plays Abigail Williams. The *House of the Dragon* star is the latest Game of Thrones actress in a West End show. She follows Emilia Clarke in *The Seagull,* and Kit Harington in *Henry V* at the Donmar Warehouse.
- When *The Crucible* premiered in Brussels, Arthur Miller could not attend the opening night. Atthe time, the House of Un-American Activities Committee investigated Miller as he tried to renew his passport. 
- Philosophist Jean-Paul Sartre adapted the story into a 1957 film.
- Salem is a suburb of Boston. The American coastal city was used for scenes in *Hocus Pocus* and *Sabrina the Teenage Witch*.

Following a record-breaking UK and Ireland Tour, the “bona fide West End phenomenon” (Time Out) now returns to London! Running for a strictly limited 10 week season at the Gielgud Theatre from 25 May. 

The Gielgud Theatre is an iconic heritage venue located in the heart of London's bustling West End. Showcasing a wide array of performances ranging from dramatic plays, to musicals, to stand-up comedy, the theatre has been a magical place of storytelling since its doors first opened in the late 1800s. Upon entering the theatre, patrons are greeted by a stunning interior complete with opulent gold leaf detailing, royal red plush seating and ornate carved plaster. The plush Royal Circle boasts excellent sightlines, while the intimate, yet spacious Dress Circle and Stalls ensure every audience member feels close to the action. With a seating capacity of 986 spread across three levels, the theatre boasts an intimate atmosphere making every show a unique experience. 

**How to get to the venue:** Located at Shaftesbury Avenue, one of the easiest methods of reaching is by Tube. The closest station is Piccadilly Circus on the Bakerloo and Piccadilly lines. There are also many bus routes which stop close to the theatre making it easily accessible from all parts of the city. For those driving, a nearby Q-Park Theatreland car parking facility is available, though the theatre encourages use of public transport due to high congestion in the area.

The Gielgud Theatre opened on 27 Dec. 1906, and was built for Seymour Hicks. The Gielgud was built as a pair with the [Sondheim Theatre](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/sondheim-theatre).

The house was renamed the Globe Theatre in 1909 by its new manager, Charles Frohman from America. It was known as the Globe Theatre for the next 85 years until a 1994 name change to avoid confusion with [Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/shakespeares-globe-theatre) on the South Bank. It was then that the theatre received its current name, the Gielgud.

The auditorium has three levels – Stalls, Dress Circle and Grand Circle.

The Stalls offers very good sightlines with each row being offset from the one in front. The overhang of the Dress Circle becomes apparent from Row R onwards.

The Dress Circle doesn’t have a strong rake. The stage is not obstructed by the overhang of the Upper Circle.

The Upper Circle seats offer good legroom. The seats curve inwards towards the stage.
