Helen George and Darren Lee star in a lavish production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s The King and I at the Dominion Theatre. The King and I tickets are available on London Theatre now.
Rodgers and Hammerstein wrote the musical for Broadway in 1951. It tells the story of a British teacher and widowed woman, Anna Leonowens, who is hired by the King of Siam in efforts to modernise the country. As the pair learn of each other’s traits, their relationship is marred by conflict.
The King and I musical boasts well-known musical numbers, such as "Something Wonderful," "Whistle a Happy Tune," "I Have Dreamed,” "Shall We Dance?,” and “Getting to Know You.”
Director Bartlett Sher’s revival opened on Broadway in 2015, winning the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical. Its Broadway stars, Kelli O’Hara and Ken Watanabe, then appeared in the 2018 West End revival. In a London Theatre review, our critic said: “Director Bartlett Sher treats it with reverence, while also trying to accentuate its relevance as a battle not just of the sexes but also of a clash of cultures.”
This production of The King and I in London returns, with performances at the Dominion Theatre in early 2024. Call the Midwife’s Helen George will play Anna Leonowens, opposite Darren Lee as the King of Siam.
The musical composing duo, Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, wrote The King and I. They took inspiration from Margaret Landon’s novel Anna and the King of Siam. The King and I premiered on Broadway in 1951, and is the fifth Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, joining Oklahoma!, South Pacific, Kiss Me, Kate, and Carousel.
