Richard Madden was born in Renfrewshire, Scotland in 1986. At 11, he joined the Paisley Arts Centre’s youth theatre programme which enabled him to be cast in the role of young Andy in Complicity as well as the lead role of Sebastian in the television series Barmy Aunt Boomerang. He then went on to study as the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, where he graduated in 2007.
In 2007, Madden starred as Romeo in Romeo and Juliet, which was the Globe Theatre’s first touring production. He then performed in the stage adaptation of Malorie Blackman’s Noughts and Crosses as Callum McGregor.
Madden is perhaps, best known for his role as Robb Stark in HBO’s hit TV series Game of Thrones, starring alongside Emilia Clarke and Kit Harington. Other notable television appearances include his role as Ashley Greenwick in Sirens, Cosimo de’ Medici in Medici: Masters of Florence and in Bodyguard alongside Keeley Hawes.
Alongside co-star Lily James, Madden starred in Disney’s film Cinderella, where he played the role of Prince Kit. A year later, he reunited with Lily James, playing Romeo in [Romeo and Juliet](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/show/23073-romeo-and-juliet-shakespeares-globe) at the Garrick Theatre, directed by Kenneth Branagh.
