Born in England in 1973, Indira Varma has enjoyed a glittering career across film, television and theatre. She’s appeared in stage productions for over twenty years.
Growing up in Bath, Varma was exposed to the performing arts from an early age. In her teenage years, she performed with the Musical Youth Theatre Company (MYTC), an English performing company based in the Somerset city. Notable alumni from MYTC include Andrew Lincoln and Will Thorp. After realising her dream career, Varma then went on to study at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, graduating in 1995.
Her theatre debut came two years later, playing Bianca in Othello at the National Theatre. She continued to perform in plays; Harold Pinter becoming her specialty with The Proust Screenplay in 2000 and One for the Road in 2001. Throughout the 2000s, she performed on numerous London stages including the Young Vic, the Royal Court and the Wyndham’s Theatre.
In recent years, Varma has continued to be a leading West End actress, starring as Miss Cutts in The Hothouse alongside Simon Russell Beale and Clive Rowe and Man and Superman opposite Ralph Fiennes. Her 2019 performance in Present Laughter alongside Andrew Scott at the Old Vic earned her her first Olivier Award, winning the Best Actress in a Supporting Role category.
Away from the stage, she’s starred in hit television shows including Luther, Torchwood and Human Target. Notably, she played Ellaria Sand in Game of Thrones from seasons 4-7.
