Born in London in 1966, Ben Miles is a stage, film and television actor. In the West End, he’s been in plays including The Lehman Trilogy and The Mirror and the Light.
Growing up, Miles regularly appeared in school productions as a way to get out of classes. He then trained professionally at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Quickly after graduation, he was cast in small roles in TV series including Zorro, Soldier Soldier and The Bill. His first major TV roles came in 2000, cast in the drama Cold Feet and comedy show Coupling.
Miles made his West End debut in Richard II at the Old Vic in 2005. The play was somewhat of a family affair, as he appeared alongside his father Gary Raymond. Miles returned to the Old Vic three years later in a London revival of The Norman Conquests, playing Tom. After a successful London run, The Norman Conquests transferred to Broadway, with Miles making his Broadway debut in the Tony-winning play.
In 2011, Miles returned to the West End, starring in [Betrayal](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/show/13758-betrayal-tickets) at the now-named Harold Pinter Theatre. But in 2014, Miles was highly praised for his portrayal of Thomas Cromwell in the double bill of Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies. He then went on to play the Tudor statesman in the Broadway transfer, receiving his first Tony nomination for Best Leading Actor in a Play.
Miles is no stranger to taking on historical figures. In 2018, he starred in The Lehman Trilogy alongside Simon Russell Beale and Adam Godley. After a highly-praised run at the National Theatre, he then reprised the role in the West End transfer at the Piccadilly Theatre. Even though The Lehman Trilogy transferred to Broadway, Miles did not reprise the part Stateside.
Aside from the stage, Miles has also played Peter Townsend in the Netflix series The Crown, starring alongside Claire Foy as Queen Elizabeth II and Matt Smith as Prince Phillip. He’s also been in episodes of Black Mirror, The Capture and portrayed John Profumo in The Trial of Christine Keeler. The stories in The Trial of Christine Keeler are also explored in the ill-fated Stephen Ward: The Musical which ran for three months.
Ben Miles is currently playing Thomas Cromwell in [The Mirror and the Light](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/show/the-mirror-and-the-light). The world premiere play is running at the Gielgud Theatre.
