Following the hugely successful theatrical adaptations of Hilary Mantel's novels Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies, the third part of her award-winning trilogy about Henry VIII's advisor Thomas Cromwell is coming to the West End. Don't miss out on the thrilling conclusion to this epic story: The Mirror and the Light tickets at Gielgud Theatre are now available on London Theatre.
Mantel's compelling account of Cromwell's rise to power amid the political machinations of the Tudor court began back in 2009, with the publication of Wolf Hall. The critically acclaimed work won the Man Booker Prize, as did follow-up Bring Up the Bodies in 2012. A dramatic version seemed inevitable, and we subsequently got two: one on TV, starring Mark Rylance, Damian Lewis and Claire Foy, and another on stage, adapted by the Royal Shakespeare Company. The latter began in Stratford-upon-Avon and then transferred to the West End and Broadway.
Now, that tale is completed with The Mirror and the Light West End production, once again starring Ben Miles as Cromwell and Nathaniel Parker (who previously won an Olivier Award for the role) as Henry VIII. Jeremy Herrin also returns to direct, and the Olivier and Tony Award-winning designer Christopher Oram will once again craft that opulent 16th-century world.
In The Mirror and the Light play, we'll see the king willing his third wife Jane Seymour to produce a male heir, while Cromwell tries to hold onto his lofty position as enemies prepare to attack from all sides.
While Mike Poulton previously adapted Mantel's work for stage, for this third and final outing it's Ben Miles who has collaborated with the author on a theatrical version, bringing his great insight into the character he's inhabited to The Mirror and the Light London production. Mantel has said that theatre is actually the best medium for historical drama, because it feels like a fresh story every night, and reminds us that nothing is fixed: anything can happen.
