Born in Oslo in 1961, Alexander Hanson has French, Norwegian and English roots. He attended the Guildhall School of Music and Drama where he trained in acting.

At the turn of the millenium, Hanson starred in The Villain's Opera at the National Theatre. He was also the original Khashoggi in We Will Rock You, and later played Captain Von Trapp in The Sound of Music. He later starred in A Little Night Music as Frederik, which then transferred to Broadway.

In 2010, he starred in An Ideal Husband alongside his wife, Samantha Bond. Two years later, he played Pilate in a national tour of Jesus Christ Superstar. Recently, Hanson has been in Stephen Ward: The Musical at the Aldwych Theatre and The Truth at the Wyndham's Theatre.
