[Stephen Sondheim's Old Friends](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/show/30046-stephen-sondheims-old-friends) have announced the full all-star cast that include some of the biggest names in musical theatre.

Haydn Gwynne, Damian Humbley, Bradley Jaden, Gavin Lee, and Jason Pennycooke join the already announced Broadway legends [Bernadette Peters](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/stars-on-stage/bernadette-peters) and [Lea Salonga](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/stars-on-stage/lea-salonga).

They will perform alongside Christine Allado, Janie Dee, Bonnie Langford, Joanna Riding, Jeremy Secomb, Jac Yarrow, Marley Fenton, Beatrice Penny-Touré, Harry Apps, Bella Brown and Monique Young.

Cameron Mackintosh produced this production that celebrates the life and work of American composer Stephen Sondheim. 

"To have gathered so many West End stars, as well as two legendary Broadway performers together for a new show such as this is rare outside a gala.' Mackintosh said in a statement, "Featuring 39 of the greatest songs ever written for the musical theatre, performed by an incredible cast, audiences are in for a musical evening they will never forget in one great big Broadway show.”

Mackintosh joins a creative team led by director Matthew Bourne and Julia McKenzie. It also includes chorerographer Stephen Mear, musical supervisor Stephen Brooker, set designer Matt Kinley, projection designer George Reeve, costume designer Jill Parker, lighting designer Warren Letton, sound designer by Mick Potter, with musical arrangements by Stephen Metcalfe.

The Sondheim Orchestra, conducted by Alfonso Casado Trigo, also feature in this production that will run from 16 September 2023 to 6 January 2024 at the [Gielgud Theatre](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/gielgud-theatre).

Stephen Sondheim was born in New York City in 1930 and mentored by the renowned lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II, who recognised his exceptional talent at a young age. Under Hammerstein’s guidance, Sondheim honed his craft and became one of history's most celebrated musical theatre composers.

Sondheim’s distinguished career saw him create eighteen musicals spanning across five decades. His work earned him eight Tony Awards, eight Grammy Awards, five Olivier Awards, and one Academy Award. His work on *Sunday in the Park With George* saw him awarded with the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1993.

## What to watch for

- In 2019, the Queen's Theatre was renamed the Sondheim Theatre after a multimillion-pound restoration. Stephen Sondheim became the first living artist to have a theatre named in his honour on Shaftesbury Avenue.
- Bernadette Peters has been a frequent collaborator of Sondheim’s. Over the years, she has created roles in *Sunday in the Park With George* and *Into the Woods* and starring in productions of *Gypsy, A Little Night Music, and Follies*.
- In Lin-Manuel Miranda's film *Tick, Tick... Boom*, actor Bradley Whitford portrays Sondheim. The actual voice of Sondheim makes a cameo appearance through a voice message he leaves for Jonathan Larson (Andrew Garfield) towards the end of the movie.

The Gielgud Theatre is an iconic heritage venue located in the heart of London's bustling West End. **How to get to the venue:** Located at Shaftesbury Avenue, one of the easiest methods of reaching is by Tube. The closest station is Piccadilly Circus on the Bakerloo and Piccadilly lines. There are also many bus routes which stop close to the theatre making it easily accessible from all parts of the city. For those driving, a nearby Q-Park Theatreland car parking facility is available, though the theatre encourages use of public transport due to high congestion in the area.

Gielgud Theatre - TodayTix

The Gielgud Theatre opened on 27 Dec. 1906, and was built for Seymour Hicks. The Gielgud was built as a pair with the [Sondheim Theatre](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/sondheim-theatre).

The house was renamed the Globe Theatre in 1909 by its new manager, Charles Frohman from America. It was known as the Globe Theatre for the next 85 years until a 1994 name change to avoid confusion with [Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/shakespeares-globe-theatre) on the South Bank. It was then that the theatre received its current name, the Gielgud.

Hit shows at the Gielgud Theatre include Simon Stephens' [*The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time*](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/show/the-curious-incident-of-the-dog-in-the-night-time), Jez Butterworth's *The Ferryman* and a gender-swapped revival of Stephen Sondheim's *Company*.  Delfont Mackintosh Theatres own the Gielgud Theatre.

## Gielgud Theatre Seating Information

The auditorium has three levels – Stalls, Dress Circle and Grand Circle.

The Stalls offers very good sightlines with each row being offset from the one in front. The overhang of the Dress Circle becomes apparent from Row R onwards.

The Dress Circle doesn’t have a strong rake. The stage is not obstructed by the overhang of the Upper Circle.

The Upper Circle seats offer good legroom. The seats curve inwards towards the stage.

The Gielgud Theatre, opened in 1906, was renamed the Globe Theatre in 1909. It received its current name in 1994 to avoid confusion with Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre.

This production won Best Theatre Event at the 2023 WhatsOnStage Awards and it will now play for four months only from this September at the Gielgud Theatre.
