*Juno and the Paycock* in London boasts an excellent star-studded creative team, including direction by Matthew Warchus (*Matilda the Musical, Pride*), set and costume design by Rob Howell (*Matilda the Musical*), and lighting design by Hugh Vanstone (*Matilda the Musical*)---all of whom have won Tony and Olivier Awards for their work. 

*Juno and the Paycock* is a play by Sean O’Casey that premiered at Abbey Theatre in Dublin in 1924. Now, 100 years later, the play is still relevant and has a rich history of performances throughout the century. Judi Dench earned an Olivier Award in 1980 for Actress of the Year in a Revival, and the play was nominated for two other Olivier Awards as well. Also, the 1988 Broadway revival earned two Drama Desk Award nominations. In addition to the various revivals, there has also been a wide range of adaptations for other media, including radio, television, and film. In fact, BBC has produced 11 radio adaptations of the play.

## What to watch for 

- This play is the second in Sean O'Casey's *Dublin Trilogy*; the other plays in the trilogy are *The Shadow of a Gunman* and *The Plough and the Stars*. 
- Alfred Hitchcock directed a 1930 film adaptation of the play. 
- Of the 11 BBC adaptations of the play, four out of the first five starred Maire O'Neill. She also played Juno's sister in the Hitchcock film adaptation of the play. 
- The play has been adapted into a Broadway musical called *Juno*, which opened in 1959.

The talented cast tells the story of the Boyle family, who live in the Dublin tenements and struggle to make ends meet as the civil war rages on. Despite the family's financial struggles, the father, Jack Boyle, doesn't work and spends endless time and money at the pub. When the family receives an unexpected inheritance, will their financial struggles finally end? Throughout this black-humoured play, the tale of a mother's resilience in the face of immense struggles emerges.

The Gielgud Theatre is an iconic heritage venue located in the heart of London's bustling West End. **How to get to the venue:** Located at Shaftesbury Avenue, one of the easiest methods of reaching is by Tube. The closest station is Piccadilly Circus on the Bakerloo and Piccadilly lines. There are also many bus routes which stop close to the theatre making it easily accessible from all parts of the city. For those driving, a nearby Q-Park Theatreland car parking facility is available, though the theatre encourages use of public transport due to high congestion in the area.

Gielgud Theatre - TodayTix

The Gielgud Theatre opened on 27 Dec. 1906, and was built for Seymour Hicks. The Gielgud was built as a pair with the [Sondheim Theatre](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/sondheim-theatre).

The house was renamed the Globe Theatre in 1909 by its new manager, Charles Frohman from America. It was known as the Globe Theatre for the next 85 years until a 1994 name change to avoid confusion with [Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/shakespeares-globe-theatre) on the South Bank. It was then that the theatre received its current name, the Gielgud.

Hit shows at the Gielgud Theatre include Simon Stephens' [*The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time*](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/show/the-curious-incident-of-the-dog-in-the-night-time), Jez Butterworth's *The Ferryman* and a gender-swapped revival of Stephen Sondheim's *Company*. ## Gielgud Theatre Seating Information

The auditorium has three levels – Stalls, Dress Circle and Grand Circle.

The Stalls offers very good sightlines with each row being offset from the one in front. The overhang of the Dress Circle becomes apparent from Row R onwards.

The Dress Circle doesn’t have a strong rake. The stage is not obstructed by the overhang of the Upper Circle.

The Upper Circle seats offer good legroom. The seats curve inwards towards the stage.
