The Royal Shakespeare Company has announced a six-week extension for the West End transfer of Maggie  O'Farrell's [*Hamnet*](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/show/28318-hamnet), with full casting announced.

Joining the company are Gabriel Akuwudike (Bartholomew), Phoebe Campbell (Susanna), Mhairi Gayer (Tilly/Caterina/Landlady) and Liza Sadovy (Mary).

See Shakespeare’s untold tragedy at *Hamnet*, a stage adaptation of the bestselling novel, as the Royal Shakespeare Company production transfers to the West End. *Hamnet* tickets are available on London Theatre now.

Journey to Warwickshire in 1582, when Agnes Hathaway, a gifted healer, and William Shakespeare, a Latin tutor, fall in love and get married. They create a family together, only for the death of their 11-year-old son, Hamnet, to shatter their happy illusion. The Financial Times critic described the production as a “tender take on Maggie O’Farrell’s novel.” 

Erica Whyman, artistic director of the Royal Shakespeare Company, directs. *Hamnet* in the West End also features set design by Tom Piper, lighting design by Prema Mehta, music by Oğuz Kaplangi, sound design by Simon Baker, choreography by Ayse Tashkiran, and fight choreography by Kate Waters.

Madeleine Mantock (*Blithe Spirit*) and Tom Varey (*Death Watch*, *A Midsummer Night’s Dream*) reprise their roles from the Royal Shakespeare Company production as Agnes and William Shakespeare. Ajani Cabey returns as Hamnet, with Alex Jarrett (*Our Generation*) as Judith.

The *Hamnet* play premiered in April 2023 at the Swan Theatre in Shakespeare’s hometown, Stratford-upon-Avon. The production now transfers to London’s West End for a limited 14-week engagement this autumn.

Most people are familiar with the famous plays of the Bard, but the playwright's personal life is more of a mystery. *Hamnet* explores Shakespeare's past and the tragedy some believe inspired one of his most renowned plays, *Hamlet*.

## What to Watch For

- Parts of *Hamnet* are based in fact: Shakespeare did have a son named Hamnet, who died at age 11 in 1596. The playwright wrote *Hamlet* four years later, but we'll never know whether the events are truly connected.
- *Hamnet* is getting the Hollywood treatment. Academy Award-winning director Chloé Zhao will direct and write a new screenplay for the adaption.
- William Shakespeare invented 1,700 words in the English language, including “critic” and “gossip.”
- Maggie O’Farrell’s novel won the National Book Critics Circle Award for Fiction and Women's Prize for Fiction in 2020. It was also named "Novel of the Year" at the Dalkey Literary Awards the following year.

The Garrick Theatre opened in 1889, and is named after actor David Garrick. When the theatre was built, architects discovered an underground river on the site!

The theatre became associated with comedy in 1982 with a four-year run of the farce *No Sex Please, We’re British*. This was the longest-running show at the Garrick, until J. B. In 2015, [Kenneth Branagh](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/stars-on-stage/kenneth-branagh) took up residency at the Garrick for a year-long season of plays with his own theatre company. 

## Garrick Theatre Seating Information

The auditorium has three levels – Stalls, Dress Circle and Grand Circle. In the Stalls, the view of the top of the stage is slightly obscured by the overhang of the Dress Circle from Row N onwards. 

In the Dress Circle, the view of the stage is not obscured by the overhang of the Upper Circle, but the ceiling can feeel low for those in the last row. The seats are designed in a horseshoe shape around the theatre and the Dress Circle offers good sightlines.
