This poignant play was written in 1893. Lord Chamberlain immediately deemed it 'improper' and banned it from public performance in London until 1902. Over 120 years later, this play is still an impactful examination of society and its treatment of women. 

As director Dominic Cooke said, "it still has the power to shock with its frank and provocative examination of the exploitative nature of society and the double standards applied to women." 

*Mrs. Warren's Profession* in London boasts an exceptional creative team. In addition to Dominic Cooke (*Hello, Dolly!*), the creative team includes set and costume design by Chloe Lamford (*Our Ladies of Perpetual Succour*), lighting design by  Jon Clark (*Stranger Things: The First Shadow*), and sound design by Christopher Shutt (*The Crucible*). 

## What to watch for 

- Imelda Staunton and Bessie Carter aren't the first mother-daughter duo to play the lead roles in *Mrs. Warren's Profession*. In 2022, Caroline Quentin and Rose Quentin played the mother and daughter in a touring production that opened at the Theatre Royal Bath. 
- Some aspects of the play were inspired by Shaw's 1882 novel, *Cashel Byron's Profession*. 
- In 1905, *Mrs. Warren's Profession* opened in New York, and the police interrupted the show, arresting the cast and crew in violation of the Comstock laws. Later, they were found not to have violated the law. 
- In 1920, Sir Harry Johnston wrote a sequel to the play as a novel called *Mrs. Warren's Daughter*.

Everything changes in their relationship when Vivie, a successful Cambridge graduate, discovers that her mother earned a fortune to pay for her education by running brothels. This play explores the impacts of limited employment opportunities for women in Victorian Britain.

*Mrs. Warren's Profession* is a play written in 1893. Vivie Warren is a woman ahead of her time. Estranged from her wealthy mother, she delights in a glass of whisky, a good detective story, and is determined to carve herself a sparkling legal career in an age ruled by men.

Bessie Carter is set to star alongside her mother Imelda Staunton in *Mrs Warren's Profession* in the West End.

She is best known for her role as Prudence Featherington in Netflix series *Bridgerton*.

On stage, Carter most recently starred in the 2024 National Theatre revival of *Dear Octopus*.

She is the current record-holder for the most Olivier Awards in a Best Actress in a Musical category, winning Olivier Awards for her performances as Mrs. Lovett in&nbsp;Sweeney Todd&nbsp;at the <a href="/theatres/adelphi-theatre">Adelphi Theatre</a> and Mama Rose in Gypsy&nbsp;at the <a href="/theatres/savoy-theatre">Savoy Theatre</a>.

In 2017, Staunton starred in two revivals, playing Martha in&nbsp;Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?at the <a href="/theatres/harold-pinter-theatre">Harold Pinter Theatre</a> and Sally Plummer in the National Theatre's revival of&nbsp;Follies. For Follies, Staunton received her eighth Best Actress in a Musical nomination.

Away from the West End,&nbsp;Staunton has starred on the silver screen, notably winning a BAFTA award for Best Actress in a Leading Role in&nbsp;Vera Drake&nbsp;and starring as Dolores Umbridge in the Harry Potter film series.&nbsp;

The Garrick Theatre opened in 1889, and is named after actor David Garrick. When the theatre was built, architects discovered an underground river on the site!

The theatre became associated with comedy in 1982 with a four-year run of the farce *No Sex Please, We’re British*. This was the longest-running show at the Garrick, until J. B. Priestley’s *An Inspector Calls* transferred from the [Aldwych Theatre](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/theatres/aldwych-theatre) in 1995 and resided for six years.

In recent years, a number of musicals have played here, including *A Little Night Music*, *Chicago*, and *The Scottsboro Boys*. In 2015, [Kenneth Branagh](https://www.londontheatre.co.uk/stars-on-stage/kenneth-branagh) took up residency at the Garrick for a year-long season of plays with his own theatre company. 

## Garrick Theatre Seating Information

The auditorium has three levels – Stalls, Dress Circle and Grand Circle. In the Stalls, the view of the top of the stage is slightly obscured by the overhang of the Dress Circle from Row N onwards. 

In the Dress Circle, the view of the stage is not obscured by the overhang of the Upper Circle, but the ceiling can feeel low for those in the last row. The seats are designed in a horseshoe shape around the theatre and the Dress Circle offers good sightlines.
