Ricardo Afonso as Judas in the Barbican Centre season

Complete cast announced for Jesus Christ Superstar at Regent's Park Open Air Theatre

The Regent's Park Open Air concert version boasts two sets of leads, including stars from original and Barbican casts of the hit revival.

The complete cast for the Regent's Park Open Air Theatre summer concert revival of Jesus Christ Superstar has been announced. The production is due to open at the popular outdoor London venue on 14 August, running for 60 performances through the summer.

The three lead roles will be shared by different performers across different performances, giving theatregoers the chance to see some of the stars of both the original Regent's Park run in addition to last year's return season at the Barbican Centre.

The role of Jesus will be shared by Declan Bennett and Pepe Nufrio, while Judas will be shared by Ricardo Afonso and Tyrone Huntley. Huntley received an Olivier Award nomination for Best Actor in a Musical for his performance in the role in 2017. Maimuna Memon and Anoushka Lucas will share the role of Mary.

Principal roles are rounded out by David Thaxton as Pilate, Ivan De Freitas as Caiaphas, Shaq Taylor as Herod, Nathan Amzi as Annas, Phil King as Peter and Cedric Neal as Simon. Genesis Lynea, Rosa O'Reilly and Elliotte Williams-N'Dure will play the Soul Singers.

The cast also features Daniel Bailey, Dale Evans, Rosie Fletcher, Josh Hawkins, Stevie Hutchinson, Billy Nevers, Charlotte Riby, Tinovimbanashe Sibanda, Barnaby Thompson and Tara Young.

The production is directed by the theatre's artistic director Timothy Sheader, with choreography by Drew McOnie. Tom Scutt is the designer, with lighting designed by Lee Curran.

The 90-minute version of the show will be performed without an interval. The audience will be socially distanced, reducing the capacity of the venue significantly. The season has been made possible by the government's approval of outdoor performances from July.

Written by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber and premiering on Broadway in 1971, Jesus Christ Superstar remains one of the pair's most revived shows. The Regent's Park Open Air Theatre production opened in 2016, playing sold out return seasons in 2017 at its original home and in 2019 at the Barbican Centre. The production received the Evening Standard Award for Best Musical and the Laurence Oliver Award for Best Musical Revival.
