Brie Larson to make West End debut in 'Elektra' in 2025
The Academy Award-winning star of Room and Captain Marvel makes her London debut in a new revival of Sophocles's timeless drama beginning in January.
Brie Larson is trading the superhero cape for Greek classics. The Oscar-winning actor from such projects as Room, AppleTV+'s Lessons in Chemistry, and Marvel's Captain Marvel will be making her West End debut in a new revival of Sophocles's classic tale Elektra at the Duke of York's Theatre in London on 24 January 2025.
The new production will be directed by Daniel Fish, who has staged stunning revisionist takes on classic shows like Oklahoma!, which went on to earn Tony Awards for Best Revival of a Musical and Best Featured Actress in a Musical for Ali Stroker in 2019, and Poor Beck for the Royal Shakespeare Company.
This new Elektra will also feature a new translation from renowned poet Anne Carson, recipient of such honors as the MacArthur 'Genius' Grant and the Guggenheim Fellowship. Her work includes the revelatory Autobiography of Red, which tells the story of an angel who falls from Heaven, and a translation of Antigone, also by Sophocles.
This new Elektra will be her third take on the Sophocles text after having translated in in 2001 and incorporated it into her adaptation of An Oresteia in 2009.
This blazing piece of drama that has lived on for centuries tells the story of a woman who must survive after her father's assassination and what happens when her brother comes out of the woodworks to encourage her to avenge their father's death. This will be the first major revival of Elektra in over a decade.
Performances will begin at Theatre Royal Brighton from 13-18 January 2025 before the production moves to Duke of York’s Theatre in London for a strictly limited 11-week season from 24 January 2025.
