Andrew Lloyd Webber reveals Jamie Lloyd will direct 'Evita' in London in 2025
Jamie Lloyd previously directed the musical about the life of Argentine political leader Eva Perón at Regent's Park Open Air Theatre in 2019.
Andrew Lloyd Webber has disclosed that Jamie Lloyd will return to London next summer to direct a version of the musical Evita, which follows the life of Argentine political leader Eva Perón.
Lloyd previously directed the musical at Regent's Park Open Air Theatre in 2019, with our critic commenting: "It should come as no surprise that director Jamie Lloyd, who has made a name for himself with daring re-imaginings of classics such as his Olivier-nominated revivals of Piaf and the Scottish play, has gone to town with this production." It is unconfirmed whether this version will be the same staging or a new production.
The 1978 musical, which has music by Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice, includes songs such as “Another Suitcase in Another Hall”, “Oh What a Circus”, and “Don’t Cry for me Argentina”.
Lloyd has gone on to direct Lloyd Webber's Sunset Boulevard, first in the West End, and now on Broadway, with Nicole Scherzinger reprising the role of Norma Desmond.
Speaking to Billboard, Lloyd Webber said: "Jamie Lloyd is doing a version of Evita in London this coming summer, and working with a director like Jamie, for me, is a wonderful thing, because he can talk from a different perspective than I do. The consequence of that with SUNSET BLVD., for example, is that we took the score a lot darker, in a lot more dangerous way than the original. But that is the joy. I’m a collaborator. The most important thing to remember about musical theater is it’s all about collaboration."
Dates, venue, and cast is yet to be announced.
