The Night of the Iguana, the classic play written by acclaimed American playwright Tennessee Williams, returns to the West End at the Noel Coward Theatre starring Clive Owen this July. Set in a dilapidated Mexican hotel, it follows the interactions between a promiscuous widow, a clergyman and a spinster. The play was first written in 1959, and received its Broadway debut in 1961 and ran in London in 1992. Tickets are on sale now.
The characters of the plat are Maxine, the widow who runs the hotel, Hannah and Reverend Shannon. They are thrown together in the hotel by chance, and forced to take cover from a furious storm raging outside.
The Night of the Iguana will run at the Noel Coward Theatre from 6th July, with tickets on sale now.
Clive Owen will star in James Macdonald's production of The Night of the Iguana, alongside Anna Gunn, Lia Williams and Julian Glover.
The story began as a short one-act play written by Williams in 1959, before he developed it into a full-length play. Over the following two years, he staged two different versions of the play, before settling on a three-act version with opened on Broadway at the Royale Theatre. It has since been staged in the US many times, and was adapted for the screen in 1964, starring Richard Burton.
The Night of the Iguana last received a major staging in the West End in 2005, when Woody Harrelson, Clare Higgins and Jenny Seagrove starred in a production at the Lyric Theatre directed by Anthony Page. In a review, LondonTheatre.co.uk said that despite the show being over 40 years old, it "still has a freshness, intensity and relevance that modern audiences can certainly appreciate".
An earlier London production of The Night of The Iguana starred Alfred Molina and Eileen Atkins when Richard Eyre directed the play at the National Theatre in 1992.
The Night of the Iguana runs at the Noel Coward Theatre from 6th July.
