Following its acclaimed national tour, the documentary theatre musical, After the Act, comes to the Royal Court Theatre. Book After the Act tickets on London Theatre.
After the Act is a musical that tells the story of Section 28–a law that banned the 'promotion' of homosexuality in schools beginning in 1988. This stunning piece of verbatim theatre highlights the teachers, students, and activists who lived through this time. From the double life of a closeted teacher to tales of church-based conversion therapy, this show explores the silence and shame created during this time, as well as the bravery and strength of those who resisted.
During its acclaimed national tour, The Guardian's 4-star review said, "This musical feels exceptional. That it creates such a compelling narrative around a legal clause, and keeps us captive in enacting debates on its subclauses, is a massive achievement alone."
This impactful show was created by Breach Theatre (Wannabe, Joan of Leeds) and is written by Breach Theatre leaders Ellice Stevens and Billy Barrett (who is also the musical's director). The creators were first inspired to develop this musical as they were coming up on the 20th anniversary of repealing Section 28 in 2023.
As Barrett said, "The discourse is being rerun today in the hysteria around trans rights. Our show is saying: 'Does this ring any bells?'"
After the Act in London stars Calie Hough (Showstopper! The Improvised Musical), Ericka Posadas (Your Lie In April), Nkara Stephenson (Heartstopper), Zachary Willis (The Naughty List), Ellice Stevens, and Frew.
The exceptional creative team includes music by Frew that transports audiences to 1980s electronica clubs. The set and costume design is by Bethany Wells (Songs of the Wayfarer), lighting design is by Jodie Underwood (Is God Is), choreography is by Sung-Im Her (Paradise Now!), and sound design is by Ed Clarke (Aladdin).
