New life is breathed into George Bernard Shaw's moral classic, Mrs. Warren's Profession, with a brand new staging at Garrick Theatre. Book Mrs. Warren's Profession tickets on London Theatre.
This drama centres on the contentious relationship between Kitty Warren and her daughter Vivie Warren. Everything changes in their relationship when Vivie, a successful Cambridge graduate, discovers that her mother earned a fortune to pay for her education by running brothels. This play explores the impacts of limited employment opportunities for women in Victorian Britain.
Mrs. Warren's Profession in London stars real-life mother and daughter, four-time Olivier Award-winner Imelda Staunton (The Crown) and Bessie Carter (Bridgerton). Joining them to complete the cast are Kevin Doyle, Robert Glenister, Reuben Joseph and Sid Sagar.
Staunton said, "The new year felt like the perfect time to return to the stage in Mrs. Warren's Profession, a play which asks ever pertinent questions about the role of women in society, and the choices they make for survival. I couldn't be happier to be stepping into the rehearsal room with my very great friend and colleague Dominic; and my brilliant daughter Bessie. What a treat for 2025!"
Mrs. Warren's Profession is a play written in 1893. Lord Chamberlain originally banned it from public performance because it was what he deemed 'improper', and it wasn't until 1902 that it was first performed in London. Since then, it's been performed numerous times in London and throughout the world, including being staged on Broadway five times.
This revival boasts an excellent creative team, including director Dominic Cooke (Hello, Dolly!), set and costume designer Chloe Lamford (Our Ladies of Perpetual Succour), lighting designer Jon Clark (Stranger Things: The First Shadow), and sound designer Christopher Shutt (The Crucible).
As Cooke said of the production, "it still has the power to shock with its frank and provocative examination of the exploitative nature of society and the double standards applied to women."
