Alterations in London is a comedy that highlights the Guyanese experience in London in the 1970s, showing the dreams and sacrifices of the Windrush generation. The show follows 24 hours in which Walker works tirelessly to fulfill an order and chase his dreams. However, tensions rise as the day goes on, and friendships and relationships are strained and tested.
The play has a talented cast, which includes Arinzé Kene (Get Up, Stand Up: The Bob Marley Story) as Walker Holt and Cherrelle Skeete (Hanna) as Darlene Holt.
Alterations first premiered in 1978 at New End Theatre, and then in 1980, it was produced as a radio play with BBC World Service. Now, almost 50 years after its premiere, this is the first time the show is being revived.
Alterations is a play by the late Michael Abbensetts (Sweet Talk, Empire Road). Abbensetts is perhaps most known for writing the 1978 show, Empire Road, which is the first British television show created by Black British creatives.
The show's excellent creative team includes director Lynette Linton (Blues for an Alabama Sky, Shifters), costume designer Frankie Bradshaw (Ballet Shoes), lighting designer Oliver Fenwick (Ulster American), movement director Shelley Maxwell (Get Up, Stand Up: The Bob Marley Story), composer XANA (The P Word), sound designer George Dennis (Blues for an Alabama Sky), wigs, hair and make-up designer Cynthia De La Rosa (Standing at the Sky's Edge), and additional material in this staging is by Trish Cooke (author of 17 children's books).
The cast also includes Gershwyn Eustache Jnr (Get Millie Black), Karl Collins (Nine Night), Raphel Famotibe (Wonder Boy) and Colin Mace (War Horse).
