Following its sell-out run at Almeida Theatre, Nobel Prize winner Annie Ernaux’s impactful book, The Years, comes to the West End stage at Harold Pinter Theatre. Book The Years tickets on London Theatre.
The Years is a play spanning generations that tells the story of a woman whose life is impacted by the ever-changing world around her. This story of womanhood masterfully weaves the personal history of the woman’s life within the larger history of the world, from air raid sirens to Vietnam and the invention of the internet. Through a combination of dialogue and narration, Annie Ernaux’s words from her beloved 2008 memoir take on brand new life on the stage.
The five women playing the five versions of the main character are the incredibly talented Olivier-winning actress Deborah Findlay (BBC’s The Split), Golden Globe Award-nominated actress Romola Garai (The Hour), BAFTA award-winning actress Gina McKee (Dear England), Anjli Mohindra (Noises Off) and Harmony Rose-Bremner (Hamnet). All five women are reprising their roles from the Almeida Theatre performances.
The Years in London has an excellent creative team, including the artistic director of International Theatre Amsterdam, Eline Arbo, who is the director and adapter, and Stephanie Bain, head of programming and literary at the Almeida Theatre, who is the English adapter. Juul Dekker is the set designer, Rebekka Wörmann is the costume designer, and Varja Klosse is the lighting designer.
This impactful play’s Dutch adaptation premiered in The Hague in 2022 before coming to Almeida Theatre in the summer of 2024 for it's English premiere, where it was a hit with audiences and critics.
As the 5-star Independent review said of the show, “Ultimately, it is the emotional experience of seeing an entire existence lived on stage; a fairly unremarkable life made utterly remarkable.”
