Academy Award-winning actress Cate Blanchett (Tár, Carol) and London Critics Circle Award-nominated Tom Burke (The Wonder) return to the stage in a new adaptation of Anton Chekhov's beloved classic, The Seagull at the Barbican Theatre. Book The Seagull tickets on London Theatre.
The Seagull is a play set in the country at the actress Arkandina's family estate. Throughout the weekend, all the characters' lives are entwined as they battle dissatisfaction with their lives. Arkadina's son, Konstantin, struggles to step out from under her shadow, and Arkandina's lover, Trigorin, becomes the object of affection of another woman. The show explores themes of unfulfilled potential, unrequited love, and sacrifices made for art.
In addition to Cate Blanchett as Arkadina and Tom Burke as Trigorin the expert cast includes Priyanga Burford (An Enemy of the People), Emma Corrin (The Crown), Zachary Hart (An Enemy of the People), Paul Higgins (This Is Memorial Device), Tanya Reynolds (A Mirror), Kodi Smit-McPhee (The Power of the Dog), and Jason Watkins (A Servant to Two Masters).
The Seagull in London also boasts an exceptional creative team, including Duncan Macmillan (People, Places and Things) and Thomas Ostermeier (An Enemy of the People), who adapted the play; Thomas Ostermeier is also the director. Tom Gibbons is the sound designer, Magda Willi is the set designer, and Marg Horwell is the costume designer.
In a statement Ostermeier said, "I have known and admired Cate for many years, and to see her on stage is always a privilege. I am thrilled that we will make our first artistic collaboration with this production of The Seagull at the Barbican, and that London will experience this once in a generation actress in one of the greatest theatrical roles of Arkadina. I'm also very pleased to be forging a new artistic relationship with Tom Burke, who will play the role of Trigorin."
