Robert Icke's exciting modern adaptation of Sophocles' Oedipus comes to the London stage at Wyndham Theatre. Book Oedipus tickets on London Theatre.
Oedipus is a play that tells the story of a politician on the eve of election victory. There is an air of hope as policy pledges are made, but soon, those promises come back to haunt him. This explosive thriller sets the stage for explorations of honesty and cover-ups as Oedipus' fate has already been cast.
Oedipus in London stars Olivier Award-winning and Tony Award-nominated Mark Strong (A View From the Bridge) as Oedipus and Olivier Award-winning and Emmy Award-nominated Lesley Manville (Ghosts, The Crown) as Jocasta.
Please note: There is no readmittance to the auditorium once the performance has begun. The show will begin promptly and there's a strict no latecomers policy.
The play also features an exceptional creative team, including director Robert Icke. Icke, who also wrote the adaptation, is known for his modern adaptations of classics, such as his transformation of Oresteia in 2015. Icke told The Guardian of Oedipus, "The challenge was to provide for an audience today the impact and immediacy of the original before we all knew its twists and turns."
The creative team also includes Olivier Award-winning scenic designer Hildegard Bechtler (After the Dance), costume designer Wojciech Dziedzic (The Crucible), Tony and Olivier Award nominated lighting designer Natasha Chivers (Prima Facie), Olivier Award-winning sound designer Tom Gibbons (People, Places & Things), and video designer Tal Yarden (Ali (The Musical)).
The show had successful runs at the Internationaal Theatre Amsterdam and the Edinburgh Festival before coming to the London stage. In every performance, Oedipus has been a hit with critics and audiences alike. As a 5-star review from The Guardian said of the show, "The narrative exercises a thriller-like grip, the countdown clock marking time, not only until the election results, but before the secrets of the past explode into the present."
