Clint Dyer and Roy Williams's play tells the story of Michael Fletcher, a man reeling after his father's death. He is forced to confront challenging truths as he explores topics of race, class, and identity in Britain.

"There's a sense of being proud to be British and that pride means that I'm allowed to be critical. The whole piece talks about a love for each other," Dyer said.

Death of England: Michael first premiered in January 2020, and it finished its run just a few days before the first UK COVID lockdowns began. However, it was years before that Dyer and Williams first got the idea for the play. In 2014, they created a "microplay," which introduced the character of Michael Fletcher. The story was filmed in a series with the Royal Court and the Guardian. After the project, Dyer and Williams realized that they had more they wanted to share of Michael Fletcher's story, and eventually, they wrote Death of England: Michael. Later, they wrote the other two plays in the series: Death of England: Delroy and Death of England: Closing Time.

Death of England: Michael is a play with an exceptional creative team at its helm, including director Clint Dyer, lighting designer Jackie Shemesh (The Seagull), co-sound design by Benjamin Grant (Machinal), and Tony Award-winning Pete Malkin (The Encounter), and co-set and costume design by Sadeysa Greenaway-Bailey (Tambo and Bones) and Olivier Award-winning ULTZ (Jerusalem).
