About A Raisin in the Sun

The groundbreaking multi-award-winning play, A Raisin in the Sun, returns to the London stage at Lyric Hammersmith Theatre. Book A Raisin in the Sun tickets on London Theatre.

A Raisin in the Sun is a play that premiered on Broadway in 1959. The show by Lorraine Hansberry broke barriers as it was the first play written by a Black woman to be produced on Broadway and the first Broadway play with a black director, Lloyd Richards.

The play tells the story of a black family in Chicago; after their father passes away, the money from his life insurance policy promises a better life, but everyone has differing thoughts on how to spend the money. The drama, filled with grief, humour, and heart, explores inequality, discrimination, and racism.

A Raisin in the Sun in London stars Joséphine-Fransilja Brookman (A Pigment of Your Imagination), Cash Holland (A Streetcar Named Desire), Solomon Israel (Jitney), Jonah Russell (Arms and the Man), Doreene Blackstock (Sex Education), Gilbert Kyem Jnr (The Milkmans Purpose), and Kenneth Omole (Barber Shop Chronicles).

The exceptional creative team includes director Tinuke Craig (The Color Purple), set designer Cécile Trémolières (The Monstrous Heart), costume designer Maybelle Laye (A Strange Loop), wigs hair and make-up designer Dominique Hamilton (A Strange Loop), composer and sound designer Max Pappenheim (Blackout Songs), lighting designer Joshua Pharo (Cinderella), and fight and intimacy director Haruka Kuroda (Life After Life).

The title of A Raisin in the Sun comes from Langston Hughes's poem, Harlem. Since its premiere, the play has been staged numerous times and adapted for film and radio. In fact, in 1961, the original Broadway cast starred in a film version of the play. More recently, in 2016, BBC produced a radio play of A Raisin in the Sun.
