About Our Country’s Good

Head to Lyric Hammersmith Theatre to see the highly anticipated revival of the Olivier-winning and Tony-nominated play, Our Country’s Good, by Timberlake Wertenbaker. Book Our Country’s Good tickets on London Theatre.

Our Country’s Good is a play set in 1788 that tells the tale of British convicts in a penal colony in Australia. The show is based on the history of the First Fleet, a fleet of 11 ships that took British convicts and colonists to Australia. In fact, many characters in the show are based on actual members of the First Fleet. The play tells the story of the convicts who, after surviving the dangerous and prolonged voyage, endure brutal punishments and cruelty, all with the intent to ‘civilise.’ Even though most are illiterate, Lieutenant Ralph Clark decides that they should unite together and perform a play.

The play premiered at the Royal Court Theatre on 10 September 1988, earning an Olivier Award for Play of the Year. It then opened on Broadway in 1991, and it was nominated for five Tony Awards, including for Best Play.

This brand new revival has an exceptional cast, including Catrin Aaron (Richard III, Romeo and Julie) as Liz Morden/Lieutenant Will Dawes, Jack Bardoe (Love Labour’s Lost, A Voyage Round My Father) as John Arscott/Harry Brewer/Captain Jemmy Campbell, Ruby Bentall (The Rubenstein Kiss, Ramona Tells Jim) as Mary Brenham/Reverend Johnson/Meg Long, Nick Fletcher (Minority Report, The Crucible) as Robert Sideway/Captain David Collins, and Olivier Huband (The Duchess of Malfi, Mission Impossible: Fallout) as Caesar/Captain Watkin Tench.

Our Country’s Good in London also has an amazing creative team, including director Rachel O’Riordan (Killology), set and costume designer Gary McCann (Saturday Night Fever), lighting designer Paul Keogan (Scandaltown), sound designer Gregory Clarke (The Third Man), and composer Holly Khan (Blackout Songs).
