About Statues

Head to the Bush Theatre to see the world premiere of Azan Ahmed’s (Deen & Dunya, The Father and the Assassin) latest play, Statues. Book Statues tickets on London Theatre.

Statues is a play that tells the story of Yusuf, an English teacher who discovers an old mixtape among his late father’s belongings. Yusuf quickly discovers that his father, whom he knew only as a quiet man, spent the 90s rapping under the name “Prince Naseem of the MC scene” and dreaming of being a star. As Yusuf digs deeper into the past, he uncovers secrets and explores the impact of loss and what one can gain from it.

The play is written by Azan Ahmed (Deen & Dunya, The Father and the Assassin); Ahmed’s debut play, Daytime Deewane, won the 2023 Offie Award for Best Writing. Ahmed also stars in the show alongside Jonny Khan (The Tempest, Assembly: The Teachers Play).

Ahmed said, “This play is a love letter to all the wonderful possibilities British Muslim men hold but are forced to hold down because they are British Muslim men. I’m super excited to tell a story where the audience will be tapping their feet one minute and clutching their hearts the next.”

Statues in London has an excellent creative team, including director Esme Allman, who also directed the research and development of Statues as part of Barbican Open Labs (2022). The set and costume designer is Cara Evans (The Misandrist, Ugly Sisters), the sound designer and composer is Holly Khan (Our Country’s Good, Blackout Songs), and the lighting designer is Rachel Sampley (Wreckage, The Great Gatsby).
