About Macbeth

Be transported to 11th-century Scotland through Shakespeare's gripping psychological thriller, Macbeth, starring David Tennant (Doctor Who) as Macbeth and Cush Jumbo (The Good Wife) as Lady Macbeth. Book Macbeth tickets on London Theatre.

Macbeth in London had a sold-out run at Donmar Warehouse in 2023-2024, and the original company is reprising its roles at the Harold Pinter Theatre. The talented cast includes Cal Macaninch (Mr. Selfridge) as Banquo, Rona Morison (The Diary of a Teenage Girl) as Lady Macduff, and Noof Ousellam (Andor) as Macduff.

The tale of the ambitious Scottish general, Macbeth, and his willingness to do anything to become the King of Scotland explores the sometimes disastrous physical and psychological effects of seeking power.

Thanks to exceptional sound design by Gareth Fry, the story is brought to life in a whole new way. The play becomes an immersive experience for audiences as sound is played through small headphones provided to theatregoers. Additionally, the live Celtic folk music played throughout truly sets the tone and transports viewers to Scotland from centuries past.

Macbeth is a play that is based on the stories of Duncan and Macbeth in the 1587 book by Raphael Holinshed, Chronicles of England, Scotland and Ireland. One of the earliest performances of Macbeth was for King James in 1606. Since then, it has been performed worldwide and had numerous notable performances including the Royal Shakespeare Company revival in 1976 starring Ian McKellen and Judi Dench.

The play has also inspired a wide variety of creative works, from the 2015 film adaptation starring Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard to an animated adaptation in 2001 and even a novel titled Macbeth: A Novel by A.J. Hartley and David Hewson.
