Since its premiere in 1597, Romeo and Juliet has become one of Shakespeare’s most well-known plays. The show has been performed across the globe and adapted into various forms, including films, operas, and other works of theatre, like West Side Story, an incredibly successful musical adaptation of the play.
The story of two young lovers from feuding families who fall fast and hard for one another, despite their love being forbidden, is a tale as old as time that still resonates with people hundreds of years after its initial premiere. Through the ups and downs, the classic Shakespearean tragedy explores still relevant themes of love, struggles against power structures, and familial obligation.
Directing Romeo and Juliet in London is Jamie Lloyd, who is known for his stripped-back versions of classic plays such as A Doll’s House on Broadway in 2023 starring Jessica Chastain. Lloyd was nominated for a Tony Award for his direction, and the play earned five other Tony Award nominations.
Romeo has been played by actors such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Leslie Howard, and Orlando Bloom. Tom Holland is the latest star to play the role of Romeo. Holland is best known for playing Peter Parker, also known as Spider-Man, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He has also starred in The Crowded Room, The Devil All The Time, and The Impossible. On stage at just 12 years old, Holland was in Billy Elliot the Musical, first playing Billy Elliot’s best friend and eventually taking the titular role.
