A true classic of musical theatre, A Chorus Line changed the face of the genre when it premiered on Broadway in 1975. Book A Chorus Line tickets on London Theatre now.
Stripping away star casting, lavish sets and costumes, and romantic resolutions, the show placed its spotlight on the chorus: the backbone of the theatre who rarely get their dues. Such originality – as well as one of the most iconic scores of all time – won the show the prestigious Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
Nikolai Foster’s fresh production – not a replica of Michael Bennett’s iconic and much reproduced original – was first performed to great acclaim at Leicester Curve over Christmas 2021 and plays a four-week run at Sadler’s Wells, London’s premiere dance theatre, this summer.
EGOT-winner Marvin Hamlisch’s score, with lyrics by Ed Kleban, includes the classic songs “Nothing”, “Dance Ten Looks Three”, “What I Did for Love”, and more. The cast of unforgettable characters share their life stories based on the testimonies of the original Broadway cast. Adam Cooper (former Royal Ballet principal dancer, Singin’ in the Rain) plays director/choreographer Zach and Carly Mercedes Dyer (The Drifters Girl, Anything Goes) plays Cassie, a brilliant dancer whose career was on the up, but is now scrabbling for a chorus place.
Tough, unsentimental, and uplifting, see why A Chorus Line holds such an important place in musical theatre history, and how its themes remain timeless. These young people are following their passion for dance in an industry that doesn’t usually see them as individuals – through this uniquely gruelling audition process, each one gets their moment to shine and capture the audience’s hearts.
