Antony and Cleopatra in London tells the story of Mark Antony, one of Rome's rulers, and Cleopatra, the queen of Egypt. Despite their differences, they fall in love, but as their relationship continues, tensions rise, miscommunications occur, and the results could be ruinous.
The play has a talented cast, including John Hollingworth (Poldark) in his Globe debut as Mark Antony and Nadia Nadarajah (Grounded, As You Like It) in the role of Cleopatra. Also included in the cast are Mark Donald, William Grint, Nadeem Islam, Gabin Kongolo, Peter Landi, Gabriella Leon, Rhiannon May, Esther McAuley, Zoë McWhinney, Daniel Millar, Bert Seymour, and Tom Simper.
Antony and Cleopatra is a play that also boasts an impressive creative team, including director Blanche McIntyre (Measure for Measure), Olivier-nominated choreographer Mark Smith (The Little Big Things), composer Tim Sutton (Twelfth Night), and BSL coach Adam Bassett (Julius Caesar).
Since Antony and Cleopatra was first performed by the King's Men around 1607, many theatre greats have performed the play worldwide. The show's rich history includes Katharine Cornell's 1947 Tony Award for her portrayal of Cleopatra in the longest Broadway run of the play (126 shows).
Additionally, in 1951, legendary actor, Laurence Olivier, played the role of Antony alongside Vivien Leigh in the role of Cleopatra. Another notable performance is the 1987 revival starring Anthony Hopkins and Judi Dench at the Royal National Theatre; Dench won an Olivier Award for Actress of the Year for her portrayal of Cleopatra.
The show has also inspired numerous other creative works, including an operatic version of the play by John Adams (who won the Pulitzer Prize for Music for On the Transmigration of Souls); his version of Antony and Cleopatra premiered in 2022.
