About Opening Night

See Sheridan Smith lead the new musical Opening Night at the Gielgud Theatre. Book Opening Night tickets in the West End on London Theatre.

Opening Night, based on John Cassavetes’ 1977 film, explores the trials of an ageing actress haunted by a deceased fan. As tension unfolds offstage due to the leading lady's personal tragedy, the cast delivers a performance of a lifetime amid the gripping narrative.

Directed by Ivo van Hove, who previously helmed a non-musical version, and will feature new songs by Rufus Wainwright. The creative team includes set, lighting, and video designer Jan Versweyveld, costume designer An D’Huys, sound designers Tom Gibbons and Alex Twiselton, orchestrator Rufus Wainwright, musical director Nigel Lilley, and choreographer Polly Bennett.

Sheridan Smith was awarded an OBE for her remarkable contributions to the entertainment industry. Boasting a career spanning stage and screen, she initially rose to prominence through sitcoms. Her television journey began in 1999 with the role of Matilda in ITV's Dark Ages, followed by acclaimed performances in Gavin and Stacey and The Royle Family. Smith's dramatic prowess shines in series like Cilla, Mrs Biggs, and The Moorside. Her musical talents, showcased in Cilla, led to a gold-certified debut album, 'Sheridan,' charting in the UK top 10.

In the theatre, Smith's journey includes an Olivier-nominated role in Little Shop of Horrors and an award-winning turn as Elle Woods in "Legally Blonde." Her 2023 portrayal of Shirley Valentine earned further acclaim.
