Inspired by the 1935 French film Fanfare of Love, the original movie and the Broadway adaptation of Some Like It Hot revolves around Joe and Jerry, two jazz musicians in Prohibition-era Chicago. After a fateful night at a mob-controlled speakeasy where they witness a crime, they must go into hiding, disguised as members of Sweet Sue and her Society Syncopators, an all-female swing big band.

Whilst adorning their secret identities, Joe and Jerry both unexpectedly fall in love with Sugar Kane, the band's singer and ukulele player, famously portrayed by Marilyn Monroe. As they navigate the complexities of their double lives, they also embark on a quest for love and self-discovery.

When the film Some Like It Hot was released, it challenged the Hays Code, a set of strict censorship rules that applied to films by exploring LGBT themes, notably drag. The movie received widespread critical acclaim, earning six Oscar nominations and securing a win for Best Costume Design. The movie was also among the initial 25 films chosen for preservation by the United States National Film Registry. Furthermore, it was pivotal in challenging and eventually replacing the Hays Code.

Renowned musical theatre writing team composer Marc Shaiman and lyricist Scott Wittman provide new songs for the stage adaptation. The duo have previously worked on *Hairspray, Catch Me If You Can, and the TV show Smash.
